I bought a guitar from Dave about a year ago and it was exactly as represented.
I bought a pull-release changer operated sho-bud permanent from Tommy White two years ago so my message to the forum is this---you will be amazed at the way the pedal feel of a pull release changer will add to the amount of musical expression that your feet can add to your playing! |

I have bought/sold/played all brands since 1973 and IMHO this Marlen blows a Sho-Bud away in tone, playability, quality of workmanship, appearance...what else can I say. _________________ Dave O'Brien

Dave,
If you don't sell this thing pretty soon, you'll go broke just feedin' it Breakfast!! Or does it just eat alittle at a time each day?? How long does it take it to consume a double neck, case & all??

I know a little of the history of this steel. The previous owner (with whom I have been in contact) went to great lengths to ensure maximum feel and playability in the changer. He added small springs to the pedal-rods where they engage the bellcranks to give smoother engagement, and significantly improved the adjustment system for the tension-rods (that also do the lowers).
Also of note is the changer-fingers are the 6-hole design which mean all the pull-rods runs straight to the changer without the slight bend required in Marlens with the 4-hole changer-fingers (the bend is needed to clear the cross-shaft for the RKR change if it is fitted). This results in no flexing of the pull-rods as a change is engaged.
Basically, this is one super-playable Marlen with the usual tone. Many say Marlen tone is midway between a p/p Emmons and a Sho-Bud. That's one heck of a good starting-point for a player.
This steel is very simple to understand (far, far simpler than an all-pull changer) and would suit a beginning player who wants a steel that is well in advance of the "student" models. You won't outgrow this instrument. Don't worry about the lack of a 5th lever (LKV) - there is a lifetime of music in E9th 3X4.
Experienced players will already realise the potential in this steel. For someone starting out, this is a real bargain.
The only problem is...I already have a beautiful Marlen D10! _________________ The steel guitar is a hard mistress. She will obsess you, bemuse and bewitch you. She will dash your hopes on what seems to be whim, only to tease you into renewing the relationship once more so she can do it to you all over again...and yet, if you somehow manage to touch her in that certain magic way, she will yield up a sound which has so much soul, raw emotion and heartfelt depth to it that she will pierce you to the very core of your being. |

Jay is correct about the pedal feel of those "pull release" Marlens. Puts you deeply in touch with the response !
The one I owned,(73 D10) sounded somewhere between an Emmons, and a Sho-Bud, as stated by Ned.
Once you get those "pull release" changers set up, they stay in tune, and don't break strings.
Like many guys, I sell everything, and look back, and wish I kept it !
It didn't have THAT beautiful finish, though !
Did I mention, I can vouch for Dave's integrity as a salesman ?
He's One of the good guys
