I just mounted a brand new Peavey 1502-4 DT speaker in my Evans amp. I carefully lowered it into place & after tightening the bolts, I looked in back & saw that the magnet was touching one of the blue capacitors. This can't be good! The vibration of the speaker will go directly into that capacitor. The speaker fits perfectly into the cut-out & doesn't move at all in any direction. The only idea I have is to make some sort of plywood ring between the speaker frame & the outside mounting area that would be just thick enought to clear the capacitor. I'm wondering though, if that would effect the over-all performance of the speaker/amp?
If anyone has encountered this problem, I would appreciate your comments.
Thanks.

You can buy speaker gaskets at Orange County Speaker clickhere or perhaps other speaker suppliers like US Speaker or Jammin' Jersey speaker.
This would be a lot easier than trying to make one IMO.
They are generally at least 1/4" or perhaps thicker.
I don't think that would have any effect on the sound or performance of your speaker.
...or you could replace your brand new magnet with a neodymium unit. That would be smaller in diameter. |

Jerry--Thanks so much about the speaker gasket info, I didn't even know they existed! I see the one you directed me to, which is 4 piece. I also see that they have a one piece available. Are you recommending the 4 piece over the single piece gasket? Without measuring, I think the 1/4" thickness should help clear the capacitor. I may try the Neo-magnet, but I have 2 very reliable sources that claim this speaker puts-out the best possible performance for the Evans FET 500. |

Looks like the one piece might be less fuss to install, but they spec. at 1/4" thickness whereas they show 3/8" for the 4 piece. You might want to contact them to verify.
FWIW, I've never bought anything from this company and would normally recommend www.parts-express.com but they show only foam tape sealer for speakers.
Normally, speaker gaskets install at the front of the frame for front mounting. I would expect that it would work fine on the rear of the mounting frame.
The neo magnet is sold separately from the speaker basket, cone etc. and is compatible with all BW speakers for replacement for less weight and size. Most players notice no difference in tone, vol. etc. when using the neo's.
I was sort of joking about that, but it might be a possibility as a last resort or if you come across one at a good price.
Good Luck |

Jerry--Thanks again. I forgot to ask about the glue. It looks like Orange County Speaker is recommending to use glue with the gaskets. Is that really necessary? Have you used the glue they're talking about? Yes, I'm going to call them. |

Probably not necessary unless you need to hold it in place while you install the speaker. Remember that you might want to remove it at some time, so if it were me, I'd maybe apply a small amount of adhesive in a spot or 2 to mount it. It's not going anywhere after it's bolted in.
The adhesive they show is for attaching dust caps and surrounds I think.
Edited to add: If you use the 4 pc. gaskets, you would probably need some stick 'um to form the ring around the frame, yeah. No, I've not used the adhesive they sell. |
