First, In my opinion, the B-Bb change does not belong on the vertical. I always say that knee lever placement is a matter of personal preference, with one exception. I believe the vertical should raise the 2 F# strings to G (natural.)

That however is another subject for another thread.

So here's another thread.
I have F# raises on the vertical knee lever because I have nowhere else to put them -- I like the B-Bb on RKL. But can't say that I use the F# raises very much & I haven't played with a vertical lever for very long. (I have F#-G on the first string & F#-G# on the 7th string.) So I'm curious about other players who put the F# raises there, & how you use them.

I have both F#'s to G on my vertical. Have for many many years. But when I bought my Carter in '99, I was swayed into dropping those and putting the B's to Bb on the vertical. It took a couple of years, but I eventually removed the B to Bb changes and put the F# to G changes back on. I never could get into the Bb change.

Most commonly, the F# to G change gives a flatted 7th tone with your A & B pedals, but I think you already know that. Other things I use it for are lick runs where I want that flat 7th note. Also, the minor in the no pedals position using string 1,4,5,7,8,10. But a couple of years ago, I bought a Williams and had the 6th string split put on to get the G note there. I also then put it on my Carter, so I don't use the F# to G as much for just the 7th chord. I still use it for licks more. I'm playing with the idea of keeping the F# to G on string 1 and trying something else on the lower strings that won't interfere with the pedal down chord. I tried the 7th string F# to G# for a while, but didn't find that I used it much and it made the knee lever too stiff (I also raised 1 to G# and 2 to E on the lever).

I'm thinking of maybe having string 9 lower from D to C# on the vertical that raises 1 to G. I have tried it on the lever that lowers 2 to D/C# (RKR), but I lower 6 G# to F# and lower 3 C to B on C6th, and the Carter has another rod for the half stop on 2. I didn't like the uncertainty of the half stop on 2 with all those strings starting to pull at slightly different times.

I have a Carter D12 built for me in Dec. 2005 and I have the vertical raising both F#'s to G# and the D# to E. I like the possibilities that can be obtained with these pulls.
