For those of you that don't have the cd, Curly Chalker/Julian Tharpe, it should be a must. This was recorded in Dallas, Texas at the Cavalcade Of Guitars in 1976 and just released this past year. It doesn't make any difference if you are a C6th player or an E9th player, Julian's rendition of 'Danny Boy' is absolutely fantastic and will probably send chills up your spine. Chords, tone, feel, touch musical knowledge, it's all there. The legendary acoustic bassist, Slam Stewart, joined Julian on stage that night, Slam doing his bass bowing and his scatting to perfection. If you think that steel doesn't belong with jazz musicians, this cd will change your mind. Slam Stewart told me and wrote me later about his excitement with the jazz and steel guitarist's that night. He wrote me that he would like to do it again but in Nashville, Tenn. He was blown away with Julians playing as Slam had never played with a steel guitar player before.
Google Slam Stewart and you will find out what a legend he is and our own Julian Tharpe was using him for backup. Julian's passing notes are unequalled by anyone. That is one part of that fantastic night in Dallas that is one of my favorites and from the response of the fans, it was one of their's also. There is no money in these cd's for me. I just would like to see as many as possible have this piece of steel guitar history in their collection. I have stole a few of Julian's licks but there is no way I or anyone can duplicate what that great steel guitarist did that night.
I have posted before the availabity of that cd.
Thanks,

Thanks for all the support, fellows. It's taken a long time but I'm finally getting some of that legendary stuff out to you all. I hope you enjoy it. It was a labor of love and I am so thankful that I had the guts to do all of those things in the mid-seventies. Today, at my age and if the opportunity was still there, not on your life. The stuff with Les Paul, all those jazz guitarists and the pedal steels was a one time thing. It's still hard to believe that we pulled that one off. Watch for that one soon.
Thanks, Dave A. Burley
