I'm going to make a comment and it's not a knock on the "name" pickers that are there picking.
But, it seems at the demo rooms of the guitar makers, there's always a "name" picker or guitar maker there picking and others don't have a chance to really try out the guitars. It's that way in St Louis, too.
The "name" picker may draw a crowd, but I would want "joe blow" to be able to try out my product and the reason for having a "playable" display.
(Sorry to hijack this picture thread but I had to make the comment after seeing the pictures).

I'm with Jack. I have been to the last 3 Dallas shows and never once had the opportunity to try the guitars I wanted to try out.
I did have the chance to play several Carters when they were going all out and I came very close to buying a Carter since I was able to try them out.
I learned that only a select few were welcomed to play the demos and the rest of us could just look..Hence I didn't go to Dallas this year....jr |

I don't think that's the case. In Show Pro, Mullen, Justice, Jackson, Infinity, Rains rooms they all made the guitars very easy to try. They were actually asking most people if they wanted to sit down and try one. (not while the bigger name players were on) Most had some type of band playing then. I think you could try what ever you like. _________________ JCH D10, 71 D10 P/p fat back, Telonics TCA 500C--12-,Fender JBL Twin, Josh Swift signature. |

I haven't had the pleasure of going to the Dalls show (I'll fix that soon, though)but have been a regular at St. Louis for many years. I enjoy hearing the name players give a guitar the chance to shine. And, I have never had an instance where I was not able to test drive a guitar I was interested in. You may have to tell someone you would like to demo, but when you do, there will be an immediate opening for you in most cases. |

Except for jamming one time in the Fulawaka room in St Louis, I've NEVER been able to try out a steel in one of the vendor rooms and that goes back to 1978 and my first convention.
What Joe said about the "select few" is the impression I got too. |

I don't think I'm going into Vendor rooms at the wrong time. The post by Joe Rouse, specifically about Dallas, and others that have sent me e-mails have the same comments.
I'm not in Dallas so I can't say what is happening this year, just going by the photos posted that looks just like it is in Vendor rooms in St Louis. |

Last year I went in and out of Gary Carpenters room steel room 4-5 times a day and listened to some great players...but that did not help me set down behind one of his steels and play for 10-15 minutes.I like Gary and he probably wouldn't know me from Adam, but in 3 years I hung out at his room and never had a seat.
I did have the opportunity to play 2 of Mark Giles guitars and visit with Mark. Another great guy.
I went by Justice and Desert Rose 4 days and they seemed to have the same players rotating the seats. Infinity would not talk to me. Chuck Back did visit with me and I still did not get the chance to play a Desert Rose. Once again I like Chuck.
Jack Stoner and I are not the only ones that have experienced this. I hope to go to Arizona for their next meeting. Before I go I will be asking the steel builders if I will get 15 minutes on their guitars. If not I guess I'll have to go to Steel Guitar Nashville in Nashville. I bet Bobby will let me play a few...
One more thing. I don't walk into a persons house and start messing with their tools or any type of property unless I have that persons permission to do so and I act the same way at these shows. Is this a matter of respect? I think so. I do expect a builder to ask me if I would like to set behind one of his guitars and play a few minutes. This is salesmanship, and if he says it'll be awhile before you can play then so mote it be. But 45 minutes later the same guy is playing?....jr |

I disagree with the comment posted about the vendors not letting just anybody try the guitars. Every vendor room that I went into would let you test drive on one of their steels no problem. |

Jack,
I think your argument is a valid complaint.
I was there and I found that sometimes you have to make several trips to a vendor to attempt to try out a guitar.
This year a couple of the vendors had a play schedule so you could figure out a time to go and try out. However unplanned jam sessions do pop up as well.
Albert did a great job this year and I enjoyed every minute of my time there.
My only other observation was that many of the vendor tables are closed and unattended for a good part of the day. I hope that next year the booths are manned in a more consistent manor. _________________ Mark T

Hey Ricky,
I'm sorry to have vented on your thread. Please forgive me. I should have started my own thread.
I do know that the Dallas show is great and the preparation is a multi-year endeavor. Great vendors. However if I go back to Dallas I won't have my hopes to set to play the guitars. I went back and back and did not get to play. The rest of the Dallas show was great. All 3 years.
Once again please forgive me for venting on your thread...jr
The pictures are great too... |

Didn't you? Those guys don't have ESP and the week is so hectic at that time that there's not a lot of one on one time available. |

Almost all vendors allowed attendees to play steels..No problem from what I saw...Mullen, Rains, GFI, Justice, Star, etc..just to name a few. _________________ Justice D-10, Evans Amp, Sarno V-8, Gibson Lap Steel BR-9, Telonics Pedal. |

I've been to Dallas four times and St. Louis twice, and I played pretty much every brand of sale for sale there. And if anyone's a "Joe Blow" at these shows, it's me. You have to usually ask the vendor for permission, which makes sense. Most times it's just a "point at the steel and nod questioningly" kind of thing. I remember having to be a bit assertive as well, in the midst of all the people milling about. Bringing your own picks and bar is a must. On a few trips I wasn't in buying mode so I never bothered playing the steels unless they were wide open and no one was around.
In my case I really wanted to try all the brands, and I made sure I did that. Now I can make an informed decision on brands. _________________ Jackson Steel Guitars

I want to know how many of you guys who didn't get to try out steels actually asked the builders if you could ? My feeling is that builders are being polite by not behaving like used car salesmen.
When I wandered into a steel convention to buy my first steel 23 years ago I had no problem at all with vendors and builders. I just asked them what I should know about there guitars because I wanted to buy a pedalsteel. I told them I had a $1000 to spend so they knew I not only had no idea about what I was doing but I couldn't even afford one. They all took the time to show me there steels and talk about them. I ended up buying my first steel from Buddy Emmons at the MCI booth. When I asked him why I should buy the guitar they had on display he said "Well, it works and costs a $1000".
My advice is to not be shy and walk right up and introduce yourself. Just talk directly with the builders about what you want and in my experience they will be very responsive and helpful. _________________ Bob
