It seems that in virtually every band situation, where there are multiple lead instruments, I end up playing the fills on the chorus. I rarely get to play fills on verses.
I've pointed out this observation to several band leaders, and suggested the steel shouldn't always be used in such a predictable and limited fashion; but it continues nevertheless.
Have you noticed such a pattern in the the groups you play with? What does it mean, if anything? Should I be upset, or just happy they want me to play at all? |

I really try to stay off of fills when others are taking 'em... in some bands there's a lot of respectful and musical listening going on. In others, the instrumentalists seem to take every hole they can grab. If it's a guitar player, they often don't fill as agressively when they're singing backup, hence more openings on choruses.
It really is a joy to play with folks who listen, and try to serve the song ahead of their own ego. It seems like a no-brainer that some variety in back-up noises would be more entertaining and musical. However... |

Discussion/arrangement's/ are up for grabs i'd say, you'd be surprised what 10 minutes per 'Get together' can accomplish... I play 7 piece and we have to discuss pieces/arrangements and triple harmony lines all the time, works on the memory a bit. For a band to sound at it's peak efficiency, i think every man should be listened to at rehersal's, otherwise there is great exsperience's being shut down by somebody, i have worked on both sides of the fence, where you just show up-shut-up and play, those bands are generally 'Jam' bands without solid arrangements.
On the ad-lib stuff, we do a 'Clockwise' direction, guitar/fiddle/steel but just on the jam songs, not all night.I use a 3 finger code for any uncertain new songs, so guitar player is numbered one/ fiddle is numbered 2 and i'm numbered 3, so if looking down getting ready, i'll show 3 fingers, TWO with finger picks on and one without and my thumb touching my pinky fingertip.... and i don't have to nodd around. _________________ A.K.A Chappy. |
