Howdy folks.
Just wanted to let you know about a couple of shows I'll be playing here soon.
If anyone was watching an ESPN show called "dream job" then you already know who Zach Selwyn is.
For the 99.9% of you(including me) who didn't see the show, I'll just describe Zach as a Jewish, rapping country-rock .....uh....hmmm....... Artist, who has asked me to play a little steel guitar with him at:THE HOTEL CAFÉ 1623 1/2 N. Cahuenga (South of Hollywood) friday night 11:00pm. We will also be at the warped tour show in Ventura, CA july 7th.
I will also be playing with a band called "the Supersuckers" in San Diego july 1st or 2nd or something close to that. I'll edit this post when I have some concrete dates.
I will be appearing in my living room in the interim, trying to send our cat into seizures with some "almost right on the mark" speedpicking exersizes(sp?)
I hope to be posting some actual honky-tonk type gigs here soon, I just can't find anyone doing "the real thing" here in Los Angeles that needs me.........
Hope all is well with you folks that get to play real country music out there. Maybe one day I will too! I'm just happy to play almost anywhere!!
cheers,
Jordan Shapiro

The Supersuckers? That's a cool gig! Are they playing country all night? Let us know how how that goes for you.
P.S. Does the cat go into siezures when you get the lick right? Or is it the other way around?[This message was edited by Henry Nagle on 18 June 2004 at 07:54 PM.] |

Yeah the Supersuckers gig is a nice one to have, although they tour in a van, so there ain't enough room to bring me on tour yet. But just doing thier gigs here in the southland(no offense to anyone that lives in the REAL southland) is good enough for me at this point.
They are doing what they call the "big show" now, which consists of a 2hr+ show that starts as a country show and ends up in the patented rock show that they are famous for. I don't know the exact shows they want the steel on yet, but I know I'll at least be in San Diego with them. I believe they are doing a straight up rock set at the hootinanny(damn, damn, damn) but we'll see?!?!?
The cat actually reacts the worst to my learning Don Rich tele licks. I knew, the day that the cat didn't go hide in the bedroom when I was practicing the steel, that I was getting to be a tolerable player.
And as far as Zach goes, he does everything at once, from countrified versions of Beastie Boys songs that morph back into rap in the middle of the song, to upbeat origional california-style(burrito bros. etc.) country songs.
I ended up sitting in with another fella at those shows that did more bluesy-style suff, and actually ripped up the Statesboro blues.
Mike Perlowin, if you read this, know that I was thinking of you as I was figuring out how to play pentatonic bues riffs on my 10-string country machine!!
Also, Mr. McMullen, hope all is well in the Speedbuggy world, I saw your post on the Dave Zirbel thread. Glad you're back rockin' with Timbo & Co.
I'll be playing with Zach on July 11th on the Ventura Co. Warped tour show, dunno what stage yet. Got a call to work with Kevin Banford and his Bakersfiel Boys Fri. night, but was already booked..........#^$%#@*!!! I just wanna play some country music.
By the way, for anyone that hasn't been to Herb Steiners' site, there are some of the greatest (mp3's?) of steel guitar that I have ever heard on there, very inspiring. Thank you Herb!!
cheers,
J

My God, I though this post was dead and gone.
Good to hear from someone in Seattle that knows who The 'Suckers are. It is a good gig, and a bunch of fun, rockin' with Mr. Spaghetti & Co.
For any newer steelers that may read this, and are wondering how to get better gigs, I'll tell you that I got this one by agreeing to play for their opening band(against what I thought was my better judgment), showed up early for soundcheck( a good habit to be in!!), set up my steel and was ready to go, and the Suckers steeler didn't show up so I asked them if they wanted me to give it a go and the next thing ya know, "you're hired"!! Blam.
Always show up early and be prepared for anything that might come at you, and things will happen for you.
Also, if anyone is interested, I'll be working with Kevin Banford and the Bakersfield boys this Sat. at Iggy's in Yucaipa, Ca trying to fill the shoes of the great Gary Brandin and Greg Vincent(and every other steeler for a 150 mile radius). I can't tell you all how happy I'm gonna be to play some real honky tonk country music. (and get paid for it!!.....crazy)
sure am interested to see what kind of e mails the name Kevin Banford will generate from you local steelers.........
And Howard, although the name is a little "open to interpretation" I assure you they make enough $$ playing that they don't have to do any "side work".......................................anymore.
Sure hope none of 'em read that.
anyway, cheers to y'all and keep on pickin'

Bring ear protection to the Supersucker show. I played on the same bill with them twice and I couldn't even hear the person next to me shouting right in my ear. They are LOUD!
