I was fortunate enough to attend the Saluda show. Its always great and with one of the best house bands anywhere. Great area players like Bob Strum and Gary Campbell make us all want to go home and practice.
As always Herbie was fantastic and hey who can out Herbie, Herbie? Answer, nobody I know. Rusty Rhoades of steel guitar forum infamey was there also.
He played a great show with no set list, no charts, he did it the old school way and the great house band responded accordingly taking requests, no matter how unorthodox.
He stood up, leaned his Jackson upon its front legs and played it like a dobro as he sang working man blues. And guess what imho he managed not only not to offend anyone but instead he won over the audience.
Not his publicist just a fan.

I play bass in the staff band and I can say I enjoyed the show Rusty put on, as much as any I played. He plays it all. The audience really enjoyed it. He's a super player. I also got to see many old friends. How can you beat a day like that.

It was a great show...standing room for a big enthusiastic crowd. Such a variety of music and when you have the best back-up band, it makes playing so much easier.
Thanks David et al for the years of work to make this show possible.
Sincerely, Bob Strum |

Great show, great lineup. Rusty was fantastic.
Got to see many old friends and made a few new ones.
It's encouraging to see the young players like Austin Tripp and Tron (hope I spelled that right)coming on and doing such a fantastic job.
I can't say enough about the backup band. It don't get any better! They even make an old duffer like me sound pretty good.
Those that didn't make it sure missed a good one.

I will say that Rusty was absolutly killer and in my opinion qualify's as a monster player!
Yea, he's crazy as well because he's my friend and i told him to stay out of trouble cause we need a player like he plays around a long time!
Besides the fact that he played some C6 stuff that was off the chain, i saw a different side of his personality at the Saluda show. He is the real deal and he took the time to talk with anybody that stopped and ask him something! The people in Saluda including the band are so nice and truly love to hear steel players. They show it every second you are playing.
I look forward to seeing Rusty again! thx brother for coming!!!

This show was so much fun, I hardly had time to knit!!! We smiled hard all day at a lot of good players! but when Rusty Rhoads played, OMG!! what a great variety of songs and styles!! For those of you who missed it, you really lost out on a great show!! Herbie needs to make no apologies for his playing!!! He played a really nice set!!

Wayne, Bob, Bill, Kenny and Jeanie--you are all right on target about this show--probably one of the best I've attended. Had it been a baseball game, I would say Rusty knocked it out of the park!! |

Off Topic a Little, but more related to Saluda's Goals
I know we have a lot of military types in SGF, so I'm posting this here as general info.
Due to the VA being overrun and unable to timely treat our vets, the Shriners have, for the first time in our history, voted to start accepting patients over the age of 18 in their 22 burn and orthopedic hospitals. War vets returning from Iraq/Afghanistan needing burn and/or orthopedic/prosthetic care will be accepted and treated at no cost whatsoever. We have already accepted the first of these patients.
We do not accept insurance or government funds, and we don't even have a billing department. We are 100% donation-supported, and our IRS-audited figures show that over 95% of all money goes directly to patient care. Please keep this in mind next May when one weekend you see a bunch of guys out in funny hats. We are there supporting children and now the men and women of our armed services.

Hey John,
As Joe said, a very good post. And Joe, to answer your earlier post, yep, he's that good. And for what it's worth, Rusty not only played great, but handled the entire weekend like a real pro. Very receptive to everybody's requests and questions, and a bunch of fun to work with. I've had the pleasure of playing drums for Rusty in Atlanta, Saluda, St. Louis and Dallas, and it is always a fun set.
By the way Joe, we are gonna get that golf game in one of these days.
See ya soon,
Jim |

Ok, I think this subject was beat to death on this forum, BUT I'd just like to try and end the discussion of Rusty Rhoads' ability vs talk... If you dismissed someone's ability to play well every time they opened their mouth to let braggin' or foolishness drop out, hmmm...how would you rank guys like Chauker as a player...and how about...well you know, you get my point!! Rusty may not have polish in his words, but when he plays that steel, mmmm mmmm mmmm, does he shine!! He was a total gentleman at the Saluda show!! I can't wait to see him again and I hope it's soon. _________________ ...not just a bass player's wife! I never heard of any Chauker but I did a hear of Curly Chalker a time or two..I wouldn't in any way fashion or shape or form compare Rusty to Curly Chalker..I grant you Rusty is a good player however Chalker was a great player, one of the best ever.. |
