I find no use for a pickguard beside cosmetics, as I dont plant my fingers on it when playing.
Some folk do though, and like to have a pickguard on a mandolin.

I read a few interesting opinions on the mandolin forum and tele forum, and I figured a poll here could add to the current opinions on the matter.

I took the pickguard off mine as it seems to project the sound better. I have the "F" holes and the pick guard was virtually blocking the sound from coming out!

I have one on my mandolin but I'm in the process of getting the instrument autographed by various people so I might remove it later on if I need the room. I play probably 90% of my mandolin work "plugged in" with a pre-amp so the thing about disturbing the sound projection means nothing to me. I do some occasional bluegrass gigs on it but I leave the pickguard on for that and I don't think it does anything for the sound either way......Here's a shot of my favorite mandolin.........JH in Va.

I've never liked a pickguard on a mandolin or an archtop guitar, but I do tend to plant a finger on the top when I'm playing...
