Windows 7 SP 1 has been released to Microsoft Tech Net and Microsoft partners.
It will be released to the general public next week--on the 22nd, I think.
You will be able to get it through Windows Update or through a separate download.
I suspect you will be able to order it on DVD before long also.
If you have a retail Windows 7 disc, you will be able to combine the Service Pack with your retail disc through a process called "slipstreaming", if you have a burner and a bit of patience. There will be tutorials around for this project.
Slipstreaming will save you the trouble of downloading a jillion different updates if you have to reinstall Windows 7 at some point in the future. |

I installed it this morning on my Win 7 64 bit system. No problems, so far. But it's mostly just a compilation of previously issued updates. There are couple of minor enhancements such including an HDMI update but nothing "earth shattering".
Since the SP1 includes all previously issued updates, they are an "all in one". If the Update is downloaded and a disc burned with the update it will save the Slipstreaming process, which can be detailed. If a reinstall is required, install Windows 7 then update using the SP1 disc. |

I updated with no issues using Windows Update.
However, preliminary reports indicate some are having trouble getting the install to complete via Windows Update.
It's rare, but it happens with every Service Pack.
A possibly better method is to directly download the EXE file for your particular version (32 bit or 64 bit) from the Windows download center.
It took me less than 10 minutes to download the 903.2 mb file over an ordinary cable connection. But I did NOT use the exe file to update.
All you have to do is poke the EXE file with the mouse and away it goes. Might take an hour, depending on your PC's speed.
The 64 bit EXE file is 903.2 megabytes in size. Make sure you get the right one. The 32 bit version is smaller.
But, the vast majority of people are getting it through Windows Update with no issues.
If you intend to burn SP 1 to a disc, you will need the ISO file from Windows download center. It is nearly 2 GB in size and includes both the 32 bit and 64 bit versions. |

There was a post by one of our fellow "VIP's" on the Dell forum that they downloaded it via the updates on all but one of their PC's. The other one failed with an error code 80200053 error, and found that revalidating windows 7 fixed the issue and the download was completed and installed.
I saw one post on the Windows 7 forum with the same error code and the fix reported on that one was to just reboot and the download worked OK. |
