Well, here it is...after about 100 hours of restoration. I completely restored or replaced and cleaned every part. This has been very rewarding to see the end product. I still have some final polishing to do, but I couldn't resist a little playing time....What an instrument!!!
A couple of pics from the shop:

They are XR-16s. I am actually playing through a Marshall acoustic amp...works well at low volumes. |

really nice steel..that would work for me. i've never seen that color choice before.
i'm always curious why a quality steel needs to be restored after only 10 yrs or so. my steels are 'much' older but are fine with normal maintenance.
that should still have been like brand new. |

On this steel, Mickey did not do his usual "clean-up" at my request in order to keep the cost down. When I got it, it smelled like someone had used 90W gear oil to lube the changer. I had to soak every part individually, including the changer levers, shaft and fingers in solvent for a couple of days to remove the grime. I think someone spilled a can of soda down the changer at some point. I replaced or re-honed several fingers as well. I recall the groove worn into the low C changer finger was about .040".
Since I had to patch and re-flock the underside, everything had to come out anyway. Much of what I did was because other deeper components had to be accessed.

thanx dustin. it's amazing how steel guitar abuse seems to show up regularly. the guitar is beautiful and certainly there is no shame in taking pride in it as you have.
my zum has had a fair amount of whiskey poured through the changer, but it has cleaned up ok. i applaud your desire to know the inner workings of your steel. too many people know too little about their machine. quite the same as all the newer harley owners who have to have a shop change their oil. |

Hey Terry,
That's great to hear. I do miss the sweet tone and action of that one. Rains is definitely a top tier steel in my book, and Gary Carpenter is a real honest person. |

Great pics Dustin, and great job!....
I for one DO know what a lengthy job it is to refurbish a steel guitar with this kind of attention to detail....It sounds wonderful too!!!......Mick _________________ ARTIST RELATIONS: MSA GUITARS
