I've only tried Humbuckers so far, but the tone is kind of bugging me, would like to try some single coils.

Trying to do a poll, if I can get it to work...

We no longer have to choose. We can now have it all. The Alumitone pickup the single coil sound, without the 60 cycle hum.

Kudos to Lace and to our friend, the late John Fabian, may he rest in peace, for making tbese pickups available to us.

I was bored yesterday evening so I decided to swap out the pickup in my Carter SD-10. I took out the Lawrence XR-16 that's been in there for probably three or four years and reinstalled my Truetone. The Truetone still has some hum, which was what made me take it out, but I really do prefer its sound compared to the humbucker. When the single coil was last in my guitar I didn't yet have my TC Furlong SPLIT cab and that amp really seems to like the Truetone. There's a difference to be heard all over the neck but especially above the twelfth fret where the notes seem more transparent and musical.
The hum is still annoying though, so maybe I'll take Mike's suggestion and try an Alumintone at some point.

Once upon a time I had to consider the noise of humbuckers for studio jobs, but that was a years ago back in the Old Country. Now, thankfully, I can happily live with the hum - and the wonderful tone - of single-coils.

I suppose we all have to decide on ''great tone '' of the single coils or not as good tone of the ''humbuckers '' . I have heard of the Alumitones but i don't think i have heard one . I think the hotter the pickup the more noise ,but i could be wrong ! I love the tone of my single coil in my Emmons LeGrande lll .

HBUCKERS for one simple reason...you can use them in any setting, any stage, any room, no fear of noise. I prefer SC's for overall sound but I prefer to bring a Steel Guitar that can have zero issues with noise and the room. The Steel is a working Instrument. Setup and play.

Please don't drag this into a discussion about AC filters and what not because I am once again playing the room from hell and every Steel player that plays this room went back to HBuckers on the guitars.

E66 and 10:1...

on a live stage it's difficult to dial in that exact single coil wonderful tone everyone is speaking of...it may sound awesome at the amp but once it reaches the mains and the monitors or 30 feet out, it's just a blend in the overall mix.

If I owned at least two Steels I would have one with HB's and one with Trutones, and I would know which one to use on certain gigs...

that's all I got...

Noise issues aside, I prefer the mellower sound of HBs.

I have a pair of ShoBud Pro II's. One has humbuckers; the other single coils. I prefer the single coil on E9 and the HB on C6.

Alumitone if you want a SC sound and no hum, great PUP and great tone from fret 1 to Hughey land.
So for me, a SC sound.
