These pictures are early in the finish process. so far it's stain and sealer only. When ready for assembly I will scrape off the finish for the necks and glue them on. I will finish the necks and body separately. I am still working on the fret boards which are purpleheart. I am still trying to decide whether to use white binding for the frets or mother of pearl.
I want the finish to look almost like fine green moss on oak. I know it sounds stupid but it's my guitar, and I am the one I'm trying to please.

It's taking shape, Bill. Same as with the shellac finish, the moss-on-oak stain is top of the line because it is you that you have to please. I'll be following along now..waiting for more pics as the project goes toward completion. I wanted to ask you, please reconsider gluing the neck on. But that, like all the other stuff, is your call of course.
Good luck my man! _________________ BenRom Pedal Steel Guitars

Thanks Bent, Mike.
I struggled for the longest for a finish color and almost went with the standard sunburst. Then while cleaning some rubbish from around Mom and Dad's old house that I rent out, I found some mossed over boards and got the idea.
The stain started with yellow, then blue, then green with a little red in spots. I sanded untill it looked right and added some color as I went. I used water base and alcohol base stain directly on the wood, as well as between sealer coats.
I will continue to think about whether or not to glue the necks Bent. Things do change, and I do want this old mossy dog to sound good.
I am still struggling over whether to use purpleheart fretboards or padauk. The padauk is a more orange color. My wife likes the purpleheart, so I may go with the padauk. I have made the fretboards from both woods for comparison while trying to decide.
I am taking this opportunity to polish all of the metal work. I finished the underside the same as the top, and the polished metal should look really good. _________________ You can observe a lot just by looking |
