You presume a lack of knowledge that I don't have. I've been at this for going on 40 years and have owned multiple '50s Fenders with either finish. I'll stand by what I said: the first picture happens to look like a classic '58-59 three color sunburst. The latter pic definitely looks more like the earlier two-tone finish. And in any event it looks like a wonderful P-Bass.
By the way, do you ever post any STEEL guitars on this website, or anything not relating to selling gear? |

I did not mean to offend you, but your initial reply seemed to imply that you did not know the difference in a 2 tone a and 3 tone sunburst (the lack of red in the burst is dead giveaway )finish hence the reply and the posting of the additional photo to clarify the bass in question ,and no I do not sell or know a lot about steel guitars and the vintage models I get in I usually have buyers waiting. I donate and pay to be here so that I can post gear for sale and offer answers to questions posted to possibly help fellow gear lovers. _________________ Greg's Guitars at http://www.gregsguitars.net or

I too thought this was a STEEL GUITAR FORUM for subjects related to steel guitar, not a billboard for vintage guitars.
The bass looks like it has red in the sunburst to me too. |

Just chiming in here...
The first pic does seem like it could be a faded 3-color, so it's easy to see why one might come to that conclusion. Web photos are notoriously bad at showing the subtleties of 'burst colors.
As for selling instruments other than STEEL GUITARs...this for sale section always features different sorts of instruments. I don't see why it should come as a surprise to anyone to see a vintage bass here.
Good luck selling it...it would indeed be a nice chunk to send b0b's way. _________________ John Allison

No dog in this hunt, but heck, I like seeing other stuff for sale here, especially some of the cooler vintage stuff that Mr. Mayo posts from time to time..
Kinda like reading National Geographic, at least I can see the places I'll never get to go.. |

I would suggest white balancing your digital camera or perhaps dealing with color temperature in lighting your photos. The reddish yellow cast in the first photo is deceptive in that it sure looks like there is some red between black and yellow. The real tell is the second photo that shows the pickguard removed. In that there is no difference in the fade in the under vs. exposed areas, that would indicate no red and thus a two-tone. Cool bass. |

I did just that (white balance), but alas every guitar photographs differently and every server / computer sees things differently as well, I assure you it is a gen-u-ine 2 tone 1958 Fender Precision bass from the Fender factory . I have reshot some gear and others just left as is , this 1st pic is from an earlier date ,thus the misconception in the colorization .I do appreciate the positive feedback guys ( and gals ). Most forums I belong to, the members get peeved when I DO NOT post gear pics as they ,like myself never get tired of seeing cool stuff I am fortunate that I love what I do concerning guitars and sometimes just assume others share my enthusiasm, I very rarely sell anything from the forums I support with the dealer/vendor/supporting membership fee's I have to pay but it has allowed me to meet new people and make great long lasting friendships. _________________ Greg's Guitars at http://www.gregsguitars.net or

I'm 99 percent positive that bass started as a three-tone and the red washed out. I've owned many, many...many vintage Fenders. And 1958 was the first year of the three-tone guitars. Personally I think it looks better than a stock tobacco burst that they made on Strats from 54 to 57 and P-Basses from the same years. I don't know if you have checked vintage prices lately but the market has almost collapsed. they sold a '60 teaburst Lester in Franklin TN last week for $80K... _________________ I need an Emmons! |

excellent Bass in the
INSTRUMENTS FOR SALE SECTION
NOT THE STEEL GUITARS FOR SALE SECTION
The year mentioned is a very odd year for Fender, almost transitional. It may be possible that a two tone in 58 was not exactly the same as a two tone in 54..Fender was about to go 3 color and all bets were off back around then...
I had ( wish I had it back) an original 58 Strat in Black. I had several dealers and such tell me that it was not an original guitar until I showed them the original sales receipt which I got from the original owner. It was a custom order. I sold it in the early 80's for some pretty good bucks, I can't even imagine what it would be worth today, it may possibly be the only original black 58 Strat in existence ! Certainly one of a very few.
The Bass above looks totally original to me, so what if it appears to have some shade of red, it does not have the full blend of red like the 3 color SB does.
When I had a 54 Strat , the two tone was a tad different than my friends 56 two tone Strat.
Just sayin'
Good luck with the sale
What's the difference in selling a vintage 60's Push Pull on this forum vs selling a Vintage Fender Bass ? I think Bob would be mighty pleased with a piece of the $10k action !

Nice bass. Personally, I like Robert's ads. The gear is primo eye candy. Mostly out of my league, but a guy can dream. : _________________ Jackson Steel Guitars

Yes, it keeps me in touch with how the other half lives - the half on the other side of the 99.5th percentile, that is. |

Robert,
The pick guard is in the original material but seems to be in like new condition, is it the actual original one that came with the bass?
Thanks,

I had to chime in on this bass thread.First, nice bass,I like bass guitars they make my Tele and my steel guitars sound good.I know we have a lot of double and triple threat players here on the forum that have interest in other types of guitars and such,Roberts post show some really nice stuff that need to be seen by young and old.I think the commercial part of this falls way behind the info and history we gain. The discussion about the finish is a good example.I have a 57 musicmaster that is well worn but the metal pickguard is in great shape and original, just to add my 2 cents.I am jealous of some of the guitars Robert has but I enjoy the ads.Ease up on the flames. |
