Paul, I can think of Nelson Wynn, Charlie Hall, and Buddy Williams, a great lead player that can make steel sounds on his guitar.(I think Buddy has a pedal steel too) I think all these guys are from the South Bend area. I'm sure there are many more, I've just had the opportunity to meet these guys at a Jam a few years ago. All super players and very nice guys. I'm from Illinois, just a stones throw from Kentland, IN. That South Bend area seems to be a hot bed of musical talent. Wasn't there a fellow by the name of Emmons from there Cal? Winking

Back in the early 80's I saw an elderly gentleman playing a Multi-Kord at a dinner/dance upstairs at the KC Hall in Jasper, Indiana. I wonder if he is still around.

There's a steel guitar club in IN, and I'm pretty sure they get together and jam regularly. http://www.pedalpro.co.uk/folderIndex/folderHTML/steelguitarclubIndySGclub.html

I don't know the geography of your state very well but I think the show takes place a little less than an hour from Indianapolis. I went last year and it was a great. I think there are quite a few members too.

If I recall correctly, the Indy Club meets at a location in Greenwood just down I 65 a few short miles from Indy. Probably around 60 mis. or so from you Paul.

Lots of good steel pickers and fine musicians in that club.
Sharon Denney and Joe Alterio are 2 that come to mind right off.

There's probably someone right around the corner from you Exclamation

Coincidentally I got an email today from Joe Tippie's daughter. Joe played steel guitar in Indy at all the big clubs years ago; some of you up there might remember him. Anyway, he quit playing in 2008 and is retired in Florida.

Cal, Joe Tippie was an awesome steel player. I lived in Indy from '75-'81 and went to see him as often as I could. He played his old Marlen and he would switch from E9 to C6th and you couldn't always tell.
I heard he plays a lot of golf now.

Paul,

I lived in Indiana until a little over a year ago when we moved to Florida. I belonged to the Indianapolis Steel Guitar Club which is located on highway 31 in Franklin Indiana just on the south side of Indianapolis.
I started taking lessons, and eventually taught the Multi-Kord Hawaiian pedal steel guitar at the Harlin Bros. Studio at 359 N. Illinois St. in Indianapolis while still in high school back in the early 50's.

All of my relatives on my mothers side are from Frankfort,-- the Reno family.

Roger, your right, Kokomo is very close to me. PM me your ph# and I'll give you a call. I already sent my # via PM to you. Also, here's a question for the rest of you; I think I would kinda like to sell my MSA S12 and go to a Double. I'm open to any advice anyone wants to offer!

If I go to a Double, I would really like to sit down with someone that has experience on the C6.

Someone once told me there was a great player who lived near the bridge in Indiana...

... but then I realized, HEY! There IS no bridge in "Indiana"! Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes

(sorry about that...)

Hey folks... The Indy steel guitar club is still active. It’s been a long struggle with Covid and life as we know it. But we are having our quarterly club jam this coming Sunday March 6th at the Greenwood, IN American Legion from 2pm till 5pm. Bring whatever you play and join us. ( sorry... no banjos or accordion’s allowed. ) 😉. Hey, I didn’t make the rule... I play both! It’s a great group of steel players and very nice people. We welcome everyone. Our yearly steel show has been graced with folks like Mike Johnson, Doug Jernigan, Eddie Dunlap, Leona Williams, Herby Wallace, Joe Wright ... and the list goes on and on. I believe it’s gonna be June 5th this year. Stay tuned for details. Come join us this Sunday!!

I live in the Peoria, IL area and have played steel guitar for 25+ years. But, I come to Frankfort, IN often for work related travel. Perhaps, we can get together sometime and talk steel? Incidentally, I lived in Indy for ten years and played live music 4 nights a week and in a half dozen recording studios. There are some fine players there and in the area. Please, take Sharon's invite to visit the Indy Steel Club. Enjoy!
