I just installed a passive effects loop on my Sd-10. With a flick of a switch,on my control panel, I can rout the signal (pre volume pedal) to whatever I have in the loop, mainly the overdrive and envelope filter. It works great and it really is nice not bending over, or taking my foot off the volume pedal to stomp on my pedals.
On my 6 strings, I usually add a buffer in the loop, but I wanted to keep this passive and simple.
Heres some pics and my rig setup and the component drawing for anyone interested.

Scott, that's a fantastic setup. I love the functionality of being able to engage/disengage the pedal effects right there at the guitar with a flip of a switch. Very clever.

Oh, and nice gear ya got there too. Wink

Wow--how very cool and useful! Why haven't all of the great steel guitar builders thought of this?

Yeah Its super simple, and it is what it is.
Brad, with the Earth drives versatility, it can either be a clean boost or the overdriven, fuzzy goodness with the flick of the switch. Ill report more later, I gotta drive this around the block a few times.
Cliff, it might be overkill for most folks, especially if you dont play with an overdrive. I use my OD on the fly and mostly only in sections of the song, so its nice to have the convenience of the switching on the toggle. Im sure theres other applications for it though. Let me know if you think of any.

Scott,
I love the idea of having the switch for a pre-volume pedal loop right there where your hands are . It's brilliant in its obviousness and funny that no one has done this before (as far as I am aware). If you half-normaled the jack, like on a patch bay, it could also be used as a tuner out jack, which would be handy for most players. I have seen players mount loop switching boxes onto the legs of their steel guitars, but why not add the jacks and switches to the end plates of a guitar? Old steel guitars made good use of controls on the end plates and center panels, but the current makers, with the exception of Emmons who has retained the switchable tone circuit, have reduced it all to one switch on double neck guitars.

Btw, didn't Garcia have an active loop built into his Wolf and Tiger guitars? Your guitars certainly have the vibe of those beauties, at least to me. Beautiful guitars, Scott!

Yeah the Emmons really lent itself to this, everything drilled out perfect and there were no issues with depth or mounting. I like your idea about a switchable loop on the leg, that could be done with no mods to the guitar.
Thanks for the feed back on the 6 string guitars. I put the active loop in most of these, like the Garcia guitars, I also incorporate an active/passive circuit as well.
