This song is really a breakthrough. I cannot ever get enuff of it. Sorry, for being such a sentimental sap...
but...it has hope, optimism, mysticism, and the American dream...
"Return Of The Grievous Angel"...

One of my all time favorites. I love the way the lead players weave around each other instead of the usual one instrument fill per verse or chorus. It would sound busy if not for how they are tuned into each other. Pretty decent cast of lead players. James Burton, Glen D. Hardin, Byron Berline, Al Perkins. _________________ www.facebook.com/countrydaveharmonson |

PS - Jim, post a clip of The "Cosmics" doing ROTGA.
Would love to hear it. If you are unsure how to post a music file here, you can always use PICOSONG; such as I have, and continue to do. It's real easy and real good.

Just got home from a rehearsal for a big Gram tribute night we're putting on in Seattle Feb 11. 38 songs from Internaional Subs, The Byrds, Burritos and his solo albums. Grievous Angel starts set two.
I'm hoping we'll get some video from the show to share. _________________ www.facebook.com/countrydaveharmonson |

Chip-- you're right about the staying power of that song. Here's a story you might like...My daughter Jenny and her husband, a London Irishman named Dylan O'Farrell, were married in the San Francisco area a couple years ago. They told me before the wedding that their favorite song as a couple was Gram's "Return of the Grievous Angel" (recorded well before either of them was born, of course)-- they wanted it to be their "wedding song", played by me at the top of the reception as they danced. Thinking of Emmy Lou, I said "you know, there's some pretty good harmony in there", and Dylan told me his niece would be over from London with her guitar to sing and play it with me. "She's a musical prodigy, she can do it..." (Hmm..."OK, great!") So I practice the tune on my own, thinking that this is not exactly conventional song structure or chord progression, and... this teenage girl is gonna play this AND sing Emmy Lou's harmony?
Day before the wedding, I meet young Mary Grace. She has her guitar all right, but...although she's heard the song, she hasn't worked on it. I give her a CD, she's clearly not worried. Half an hour before the wedding, she shows up. No time for a real practice session...we run through the song. She's got it nailed!!! So the whole thing goes off beautifully, the 30-something bride & groom dancing to Gram's tune performed by the proud father, a little north of 60, and 15-yr-old Mary Grace O'Farrell.

Quite a story, indeed, Steve.
That's like 4 or 5 generations apart, isn't it?
Great also, the fact that your daughter and husband liked the song, and never really grew up with it.
Thanks for sharing that. _________________ Chip

Hey Chip, Good topic, I play those two Cds all the time for people and they always love it. I'm amazed that most people still don't know about Gram or Emmylou. It also annoys me that the Jahn Wenner hasn't inducted Gram into HIS Hall of Fame yet.
Going to see Chris Hillman here in Jersey in March, great to be able to see an original Burrito still!
Hope you're coping with the cold up there, It's about 14 down here. _________________ Regards, Craig

Craig,
That's great you're gonna go see Chris (hope he has Herb Pedersen in tow, too).
I caught the both of them at The Iron Horse in Northampton a few years back, and they sounded just terrific. Mostly for the whole night, it was Chris on mandolin and Herb on 6 & 12 string acoustics. Their harmonizing brought goose bumps.
They ran the whole gamut of both Chris's early Byrd days, the FBBs, DRB, his on and off again gigging with Herb, and some of Herb's non-Chris era; like with the Dillards.
You won't be disappointed [no matter if Chris is solo, or whoever is in tow].
Yeah, I think Emmylou had a lot to do with getting Gram P's career moving, early-on.
I've heard of Jahn Wenner, but that's about it.
And, too, I haven't seen a winter like this since I was in grade school. Everyone I talk to has some kind of roof/eave related leak coming into the house.
I can't wait for March, myself. I won't be seeing Chris Hillman, but I'll be seeing Florida [Ft. Myers] on March 3.
Stay warm, brother.

That's great to hear, b0b.
It heartens me to know folks such as yourself are still keeping this song alive.
It's just a gem of a song, and sadly, never really caught on with the "masses" [no surprise here]; but only with those who really knew/know which end is up.

I don't know who the "masses" are, Chip. Around here it's a very popular and familiar song. I guess it all depends on where you live.
Another big oldie around here is "Get Together" by the Youngbloods. A lot of hippies moved north from San Francisco in the 70's and brought their musical tastes with them. I guess it's fair to say I was one of them. _________________ -𝕓𝕆𝕓- (admin) - Robert P. Lee - Recordings - Breathe - D6th - Video |

b0b,
I guess I wasn't clear on 'masses'. I was referring to the present-day music buying public, such as we've come to know it. ie. not old hippies
FWIW: PBS has been running John Sebastian's Folk Legends show, and one of the featured guests is Jesse Colin Young and doing "Get Together". Yet, another song I never tire of. _________________ Chip

how can you not love a song with a lyric like...
"We flew straight across that river bridge
Last night at half past two
Switchman waved his lantern goodbye and good day
As we went rolling thru"
I love this version from "Sessions at West 54th" with Ryan Adams & Emmylou, Greg Leisz on the Sho-Bud covering taste & tone par excellance - and Buddy Miller on bass plus I think it's Don Heffington on the trap set & Bernie Leadon is in there too
