Leaping Lizards!.. one of the rarest UK country-rock showcases ever, has been issued as a ltd edition five CD set.

Press release:

The Amazing Zigzag Concert (RGF/ZZBOX1974) 2010

LIMITED EDITION - 2000 copies only! This amazing 5 CD Box Set is available NOW!

A set of 5 CDs, recorded live at Zigzag magazine's fifth anniversary concert, held at The Roundhouse on Sunday afternoon and evening, 28 April 1974, complete with a 32 page booklet celebrating the occasion.
In 1974, Zigzag, the UK's first monthly rock magazine - much imitated but never surpassed - became five years old, and to celebrate this auspicious landmark the magazine's founders Pete Frame and John Tobler organised a concert at London's Roundhouse. And not just any old concert.

This momentous occasion, indelibly engraved in the memories of all who attended, featured a choice sample of Zigzag's favourite bands and artists:
STARRY EYED & LAUGHING, CHILLI WILLI & THE RED HOT PEPPERS, HELP YOURSELF, JOHN STEWART with ARNIE MOORE and, topping the bill, MICHAEL NESMITH with RED RHODES.
Not surprisingly it was a day of peerless music, which, thankfully, was all faithfully recorded. Stored away and largely forgotten for nigh on
thirty-six years, those dusty and flaking tapes have now been unearthed and their sound quality transformed by a process akin to alchemy into nuggets of audio and artistic perfection.

Zigzag magazine may no longer exist in the physical sense but, in the hearts and minds of anyone who is entranced and transported by this music, its
spirit lives on... and, although equally dusty and increasingly flaky, we, the grateful guardians of that inextinguishable flame, are extremely chuffed
to be able, at long last, to make these historic recordings available in a manner that befits their status.

For those not in the know, Zigzag was a great 70s rock mag from the UK, and the show was a mix of UK and US country-rock.
Help Yourself are kind of the UK greatful Dead, and reunited for the actual show after spliting earlier in the year. They have the least songs, but I seem to recall this is due to the fact that they tended to jam out their numbers.

Starry Eyed & Laughing were a wonderful UK country-rock-Byrds influenced band, and probably the youngest perormers at the gig. Chilli Willi & The Red Hot Peppers were kind of the UK version of Commander Cody & The Lost Planet Airmen, but more of the pub-rock version perhaps.

The two great American artists were none other than solo artists John Stewart, and Michael Nesmith.
Nesmith was supported only by Red Rhodes, and boy howdy!.. it's a damn great set by Red and Nez!

I recently read a good review of this release, the sound is apparently super crisp and everyone seems to have been on fine form.

What more can I say...........

Jason,
What interests me most is the live recording of Chilli Willi.
Here is a picture (scroll down to the middle) of them.
Must be Snakefinger on the banjo.

Joachim, I do like their sound, I thought their albums were a little stiff, and figure they would have been a lot better live. So, yeah, another bonus of this set.

I'm starting to sweat it out, I only just bought a copy, and probably won't have to wait long, but it feels like forever already.
