In my experience, Delta has always appeared to have it in for musicians. They seem to have a special book of extra charges that apply to pickers only.
Not only that, their baggage gorillas once broke the neck of a Martin guitar that belonged to a friend of mine, and they offered him $250 so he could buy a new D-28. |

No kiddin' Delta sucks.
Write a letter of complaint and they are likely to send you a rebate/ discount for your next flight.
Try Jet Blue if you can. Although I have not taken an instrument on a Jet Blue flight, they are easy and cheap cheap cheap.

I've had mixed results regardless of airline. Sometimes human WD-40 (cash) to the baggage person works. I got my D-10 (72 lbs) to Las Vegas on Southwest for no charge. Coming home I was charged because the baggage dude there was a contractor rather than a regular Southwest employee. Also, limit (without added cost) on Southwest at the time was 70 lbs. Many have a 50 lb. limit however.

Hey at least they are only charging 25 bucks for over limit...I remember the old days(well 7 years ago) when it was HUNDREDS of dollars if you were AnY thing over the limit.

Right; $25 is cheap. It would make sense to price air line tickets by the kilogram for both passengers and baggage. |

Delta has it in for everyone!! I conducted summer tour groups for 22 years and after several bad instances with Delta, I simply would not book them again. And forget the free tickets if you complain!! wally maples |

I flew American Airlines this weekend and they charged me $25.00 each way for my 68lb steel. All airline now charge for anything over 50lbs EXCEPT Southwest is still 70lb limit. On my return trip, my steel showed to weigh 71.5lbs. The ticket agent said "you are 1.5lbs over the 70lb limit, so it will be $50.00" (the cost is $25 for 50-70lbs, and $50 over 70lb). I told her your scale is wrong. This guitar weighs 68lbs, and if I have to take it down to another scale to prove it, I will. She said "I'll let it slide". How nice. |
