What would be something relatively inexpensive to moderately expensive for recording songs being sung in church or another open venue that I could hook my steel into to hear myself play along. Do not have an I-phone.

The Zoom R16 is a portable multitrack recorder which is around $400.
It enables you to record and mix up to 16 tracks.
The H4 is less expensive, and with 4 tracks may be just what you need.

I use the Tascam DP400 "Pocket studio"--4 tracks, easy to use, you can record the church on two tracks, then lay your steel down on another track. You then make a stereo master and send it to the computer, I-Tunes, for instance. Under $200.

I like the Zoom H4n. Great sounding built in mics, and you can record up to four tracks at a time, or layer tracks later.
