The biggest question about Melobar has been identifying the model
With that in mind I have tried to create a list of Melobar models

Hope it helps

Thanks for this info. Based on this, mine is older than I thought; it's one of the early 8 string LS models. Nice guitar. |

Thanks for this info. Ted. I've always thought mine was a Skreemer but just found out it's a Powerslide. These are great guitars. I met you at the Arlington, TX guitar show 2-3 years ago at your booth there.

Actually David that is a very hot hybred custom.
you probably met Jim Frost because I've been out of it for seven years.
the pickup is a L-500 6 string Lawrence and the Powerslides were all 10 string needing the chrome front control plate to cover the end of the L-705 pickup because it went right to the edge of the neck (no chrome front panel like the orginal Powerslide Melobar) but it was custom built with a Powerslide body.
cool guitar - so many were built I don't remember that one but from the set up it was probably 93-96 time frame (look at the nut and see if there is a serial number, most customs like that start with a SK for skreemr or actually say c or custom) I bet it's great to play with that set up.
Probably one of the only guitars built that way in that color. A one of a kind.
The listings on the blog site are for production models - add at least 300 custom one of a kind guitars onto that list. _________________ old Melobar guy |

Ted. Is this 6 string lap steel one of the SXL series or? Also, the 8 string Mellobro, which I got from you in 2003, what model would you call that? Thanks.

I just won a Melobro body and neck on Ebay. It's on it's way. Seller claims it was a prototype. Hoping Ted can identify it. Will have to figure out how the neck attachment worked on these.

That is a prototype from the Hardway Guitars Inc project 2008.
It is a Fiberglass Melobro that we wanted to put a neck through design - note the slot in the neck that was designed to take an actual steel tubing that would go through the neck, into the body, arch down through the body and attach to the heel block. The steel tubing would then have the interchangeable wood sound baffle plates like we put on the Melobro model XVII that gave us the power to manipulate the wood tone in the body.
The face had the Raybay fan slots and a hole like an original D60 to experiment with sound release from the body.
If your dedicated to A LOT of work you can finish that project...good luck. _________________ old Melobar guy |

Ted, thanks for the info on my Melobro prototype. I accept the challenge! Was this model intended as a 6-string? 25" scale? How were you going to attach the steel tubing to the neck?
I bought the guitar from Andy Agenbroad at Gig's Music in Boise (via Ebay). So it didn't travel far from its birthplace.

Andy traded a couple of mics I needed for it.
25" scale - 6-string - standard parts will work that you buy from Beard to complete it. Except for that neck design. _________________ old Melobar guy |

ted..could you comment on the melobros and how they sounded and their success? when what's-his-name with clint black (jeff peterson?) started playing one on the road he was really stoked about it! i thought i'd start to see lots of them but never did. they seemed like a great stage alternative. |

Melobros were amazing volume and tone wise but murder to build - main reason for my burnout - the specs and history are listed on the melobarted.blogspot.com site on history section left side half way down about melobar after 91
Wish we could get a builder back on them with the $ to do new molds _________________ old Melobar guy |

Ted and all,
After several intervening projects, I finally finished restoring the Melobro prototype. I epoxied a square aluminum bar into the neck slot, extending it into the body where it rests on a wooden block situated just shy of the hole for the cone. Then got a fretboard blank and inlaid flush frets, and position markers. Finished it in a Fender red lacquer, with satin clear coat. Guitar sounds great! Here are some pics:
