William "Bucky" Baxter has appeared on various albums by artists such as Bob Dylan, Ryan Adams, Steve Earle, R.E.M., and Joe Henry.

In studio, or live, Bucky plays steel guitar, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, mandolin, dobro, and/or organ, as well as other instruments. He notably played pedal steel guitar for Bob Dylan's band on his Never Ending Tour from 1992 to 1999 and played pedal steel on Dylan's 1997 Grammy Award winning album, Time out of Mind.

Personally, I remember seeing him in the Dukes of Earle in the mid-'80s, around the time "Exit 0" came out. Here is what he had to say about Buddy:

"He was a genius! Who will fill the shoes of all those great guys from the 60's/70's?

"My only Buddy Emmons story is that he was playing the Cellar Door with Danny Gatton who I played with now and then. I completely sucked as I had only been playing for a of couple years. Buddy stepped out of soundcheck for a cig and we had a quick chat. I asked if he would consider a quick lesson and he laughed at me.

"At the time I felt like a complete idiot. Now, since the last thing I would want to do is teach, I understand, but try not to laugh when someone asks for a lesson."

Funny story Frank,

I met Bucky when he was touring with Steve Forbert, he was real nice and I got his solo album from him that night, which is a great recording.

I could tell it was an Emmons as soon as he started.

Nice haunting licks by Bucky Baxter there. Some great steel playing.
