I found a very dirty S10 push-pull which I'm restoring. The previous owner had written the string notes' names on the Rosewood mica top. Apparently some kind of black permanent or "Sharpie" marker was used to do that.

I don't know what type of cleaning agent is safe to use on the mica to remove those markings. Anybody had experience in that or who can offer me advice, please? Thanks.

WD-40 (It's a terrible lubricant, but a great cleaner.)

Hairspray is good for getting ink out of cloth. You might try that.

Goo-Gone might work.

I read Stu's suggestion and remembered I had a yellow container of Ronson lighter fluid left over from my smoking days. I used it and it did the trick. There were quite a few black marker notes on the guitar's mica top. Not any more. And no damage whatsoever to the mica.
Now all I have to do is remove the marks on the Emmons' fretboard that were made with red fingernail polish!

By useing another sharpie over it and wiping it off fast before the new dries it will act as the solvent ,But act fast .I have had good luck with this method, sounds crazy but works.

Paddy,Actually sometimes I use a nail hardener on my right thumb nail,I damaged it when I was younger and it grows back split...However just to maintain my Idiot/Knucklehead status I once bought a bottle of bright red, never heard the end of it! Laughing Laughing Laughing

Is this stuff safe to use on an old ('20s) wooden guitar? I just got one that someone has pasted an old instructional book's fretboard diagram onto..

I was thinking of just trying warm water first (the paper is so old I'm thinking it might just flake off if it gets a little damp). Not really looking forward to using a blade or abrasive on it, but will if that's the best hope.

Any ideas?
