Just have to say that I caught John Widgren playing with Commander Cody at Rodeo Bar in NYC the other night and it was *intense.*

I have enjoyed John's great playing on many occasions with Western Caravan, so it was not a complete surprise. Maybe it was having a slightly over-the-top blues-rock guitar player next to him onstage, or just the kick of the highly propulsive rhythm section (although Cody has seen better days, he still carries a swinging band) -- the guy KICKED ASS.

Sometimes I hear JW play and think, well, maybe someday I could do that. But sometimes I just shake my head and think, well, maybe I should just kill myself and put these delusions out of my mind forever.

Awesome.

I saw CC&LPA at The Bottom Line in NYC a few years back. No steel. (D'oh!) Even though he had Bill Kirchen on guitar, it just isn't the same without the steel.

Buddy Cage was there with his band, but he wouldn't come out to play with the Commander. That would have been something to see...

Jonathan,

Thank you so much for your kind words, and constant encouragement. Playing with Cody and the band is always a delight, and the crowd at the Rodeo Bar on Fri just made for a ton of fun. PS congrats to you on your new guitars...May they bring you continued happiness, and much work...your pal JW

Jonathan,

I have the exact same feeling every time I hear john go to work... though I have that feeling a lot, I guess

The first time I saw Western Caravan was a good while ago, and it was one of those "Well, do I just go home and take an axe to all my stuff?" kinds of moments...

John's a killer player with anyone he sits down with. He gets my vote everytime.
