I just bought my first Shure SM57 and the top of the mic turns freely on the base. It seems strange that it would do that, so I thought I had better check and see if that is normal. It is not that it screws on and off.....it just turns freely. Thanks for any assistance....also any thoughts as to why it might be designed that way. |

That is normal for a 57, at least the ones they make now. |

The ones I bought 15 years ago do that as well. |

As far as I can remember that's how they have always been. |

Thanks to all for confirming that the mic is not defective. I'm still curious as to why it might be designed that way. |

To me, 57's are kind of like Teles. Basic, tough, and they sound good. It's a bit tough to go wrong when using 'em. |

The windscreen is held onto the mic by a copper band that snaps into place and locks onto a groove on the body of the mic, holding it all together. I believe that it is simply a manufacturing engineering choice, it makes it easy to assemble and repair without damaging the delicate plastic diaphragm that it protects. |

Thanks, Dave. Your explanation makes a lot of sense. Ease of manufacture is another way of keeping costs down and being more competitive. I thought perhaps there was some technical or performance reason it might have been done that way, but I was having a hard time imagining what that might be. |
