I'm currently using Kaspersky. The yearly license is due to expire, but I find the renewal of Kasperski too expensive.
On Steve Gibson's site I got the impression that he favors Zone Alarm, which is somewhat less costly. I've also had a look at Trend Micro.
For the past two years since using Kaspersky, I have had no problems.
My setup is XP pro SP3 (Main PC), behind a NAT router (Billion)... servicing 3 PCs. All wired....no wireless, and remote assistance off.
A 'Shields Up' check gave me a total green report (All ports running in stealth), except that my service provider can get pinged. The IP number quoted does not belong to my router, nor any of my PCs..... I can only assume that it is my service provider's IP.

Can anyone recommend which of Trend Micro, or Zone Alarm would be a worthy replacement for Kaspersky?

Looking forward to your replies.
Regards,
Nic

ZoneAlarm began as a firewall company. It was eventually purchased by Checkpoint Security. Since then they have ventured into the Internet security and anti-virus fields. ZA is a decent product. It relies upon regular updates to its onboard malware definitions to protect you, plus behavioral analysis. I have a product page for ZoneAlarm security programs, with a seasonal discount still in place. Check them out if you want to.

Trend Micro has always been into the anti-virus and anti-spyware fields. Their program used to be called PC-cillin. Now, it is called Trend Micro Titanium (product name: e.g. Internet Security) (TMIS). Trend started the trend of storing the bulk of "malware" definitions off the user's computer; in a remote location that is called "the cloud." This technology is dependent upon the customer having a broadband Internet connection. Because TMIS places only older definitions on your PC and reaches out to its cloud servers to protect you, the load is lighter on your resources. Most people won't notice any delay as scans are sent to and from the cloud as you open or download programs, or email, or click on links to web pages.

If you are on a high speed Internet connection, Trend Micro is one of the best options. Kaspersky is well known in Europe and is very effective, as you have stated. If you really choose to not renew, check out a free trial run of Trend Micro Internet Security. Quite a few of our members are using it and move up to newer additions as they are released.

Nic,

I am a convinced TM user.

For the past couple of years I have only used TM, Malwarebytes, and Secunia as my sole instruments for bugaboo protection.

I hardly have to do anything. Run MB now and then as well as Secunia. TM is always running, and does not compromise the speed of your PC at all.

...and TM is on the ball. When a few quirkos came around, TM jumped right up and let me know that we might have a problem here.

TM is worth every cent. You don't have to worry about anything with TM running.

...just my take

Thanks for the advice, Wiz.....
I made use of your link, and bought the ZA Extreme Security program.
My decision was based on the fact that a few years ago, when Zone Alarm provided a free Firewall, i used it with great success.

Before trying to install the new ZA, I uninstalled Kasperski.....even ran a regedit (Find = Kaspersky) afterwards to remove files left behind.
The ZA installation bombs out when it gets near the end. I actually see the ZA icon that was placed on the task bar during the installation, disappear off the taskbar and then a messahe appears....'the application failed to initialize properly (0xx0000005) Click ok to exit program'..... In this message the page tag reads "Zlclient.exe"
I've tried downloading twice ....thinking maybe a file went missing or corrupt during the process.....no luck.
I've been in contact with ZA....very helpful, but it seems I've wasted my money.
Bummer.
Regards,
Nic

PS.....I've exited my Firefox browser, email program (Thunderbird) as well as Skype and windows messenger. I've also turned off the Windows firewall prior to running install.

Nic;
Obviously, something on your PC is corrupting the installation of ZA. Did you reboot after uninstalling Kaspersky? Try using your System Restore to go back to just before the deinstallation of Kas. With Kaspersky back on the PC and running, use the Systray icon to disable active protection (whatever). Then with Kaspersky dormant, try to install ZA again. Reboot.

If ZA installs successfully, then uninstall Kas, but don't mess with the Registry unless you get a trace remover from Kas themselves.

Also, run a system scan with Kaspersky, with updated definitions, before you uninstall it again.

If you are unable to use System Restore to restore Kaspersky and still can't get ZA to install properly, you can request a refund. But, first run an online scan at Kaspersky.com or use the Housecall online scanner at http://housecall.trendmicro.com. Perhaps something evil is luring on your PC that Kas didn't catch?
