I have a couple of these I got dirt cheap and I think they are a great amp. The thing is one of them has developed a noise. when I pick the lower strings on my steel I get this crackling noise, it's not distortion.
I changed the speaker, that didn't make any difference, so I bypassed the preamp and plugged the guitar into the power amp in socket, and I still got it. I took the amp out and re-soldered all the joints in the power amp section and power supply and that made no difference either. I can only assume a component is breaking down somewhere in the output stage. I would appreciate any help or suggestions.
Thanks Dave. |

Dave,
just about every old solid state amp I have owned has had this problem. My amp tech goes through and finds loose solder spots and redoes them which always seems to clean it up.

I would clean the contacts on the Pwr Out/Pwr In jacks on the rear of the amp AND the input jacks on the front as well. You can also plug in a cable between the power out/in jacks and see if the problem goes away. Oxidation of the contacts happen as they age. If it has reverb, clean the contacts on the reverb tank connections and the molex connector. Check the tension on the molex connector and tighten the pins to ensure good contact. |

Thank you Dan & Larry, I have done some of the checks you suggest but I shall go through them again. The amp sounds great apart from that silly crackle. I'll have another go at the weekend.
Thanks again.
