THIS GUITAR HAS BEEN SOLD. THANKS FOR LOOKING.

$625, No Case (A hard shell tweed case is available for $69 additional.) All reasonable offers considered. $29 Shipping.

I built this unusual custom fretless Tele in my shop in Lawrenceville, Georgia. The body is solid mahogany with a nitrocellulose lacquer finish.

There’s a story behind the neck: I bought the mahogany neck on Ebay from a guy who sells a lot of necks here and has a lot of satisfied customers. When he built this neck he must have been having a bad day. Edges that should have been square were rounded over. The heel was cut for a Strat instead of a Tele. Many of the frets were popping out of their slots. I didn't pay a lot for the neck and don't like Ebay hassles so I just tossed it on a shelf and moved on. A few months later I thought about using it for a lap steel. So, I pulled out the frets that hadn't fallen out already and inlaid some brass strips in the slots. Then, I decided the neck was too thin for a lap steel, so I set the neck aside again. A year went by. A couple of months ago I read something about a fretless guitar. Why not a fretless Tele?

I refinished the mahogany neck with nitrocellulose lacquer. I have forgotten the type of wood used for the fretboard. It is very dark, hard, and very porous. I sprayed on about a dozen coats of lacquer to get a smooth finish on the fretboard.

If you play single notes this guitar sounds similar to an Oud. I don't know any Oud tunes so I tuned it like a Dobro (DGDGBD) and played some slide chords. Sounds pretty good. Playing chords is tricky since your fingers have to be on the fret line instead of behind it. I found it almost impossible to play an in-tune chord when I had to fret adjacent strings. For instance, I had trouble getting my fingers in line to play an Am, A, or B, etc. Seems to me this guitar is for single notes or double stops or slide. If you want to see what Guthrie Govan can do with a fretless guitar, check out this YouTube video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1PyOZhgQnvU

The bridge pickup is from a Tradition Guitars JR series Tele. The neck pickup is from a Fender American Standard Tele. Output is high. The electronics on this guitar are fairly standard: CTS pots, Orange Drop Cap, Switchcraft output jack, Fender 3-way switch.

The bridge is a six-saddle top loader of unknown origin. (It came out of my parts bin.) This is a freshly built custom guitar, but I have listed it as “used” because it incorporates used parts.

There is no case included with this guitar. However, I can provide a new hard shell tweed case for an additional $69.

Questions welcome. If you need more pictures, let me know.

If you're wondering what can be done with a fretless guitar, take a look at these YouTube videos.

All you steel players never need frets anyhow, so this fretless Tele ought to be right up your alley. Winking

Make me an offer. Christmas is only a month away.

I've dropped the price on the Mahogany Fretless Tele to $575 (no case). I won't reduce the asking price any further, but I will consider any reasonable offer.
