Any suggestions on how to find out who is playing steel on classic country records? Too many times there are no credits on the jacket. 2 tunes that come to mind are the Tammy Wynette version of Almost Persuaded as well as Jim Ed Browns version of that song.

Did you try YouTube? Sometimes there is a bit of info under the clip where people post comments, etc.

If you read down below there's a comment (not sure if it's correct though).....

"Smooth unintrusive pedal steel guitar from one of the top session men in Nashville , Pete Drake."

another option would be to google it

Definately Pete Drake on the Tammy Wynette version and the David Houston version.
Almost every country artiste signed to Epic records back when Billy Sherill was producer had Pete Drake on steel.
The exceptions for Tammys tracks(that are known) was "DIVORCE" and "Crying Steel Guitar" thats Lloyd Green.

Many thanks for the info everyone. I had a feeling it was the same steeler on both tracks. Now if only I could learn to sound like that!!

Pete Drake was on a few of Tammy's recordings. One song he played on with Tammy with great steel was "Stand By Your Man", which was a 1968 single for Tammy, and it became her career song. Pete had also played on Bob Dylan's song "Lay Lady Lay", and I've read that the steel guitar he played on Tammy Wynette's "Stand By Your Man" was "Goldie".
