At this writing there is a Gretsch lap steel on Ebay. It is identical to my 1960 Supro lap steel. Does anyone out there know if some guitar company made vintage lap steel guitars for both Supro and Gretsch or is the guitar a Supro with a Gretsch tag on the headstock?
Thanks,

The Gretsch Lap Steel can be found by typing in Gretsch Lap Steel. I think I read that it is called a Gretsch Electofonic.

Link to auction on eBay.
I think this is the one you're talking about - the Gretsch Electromatic lap steel. This particular model was made by Valco of Chicago (same company who made National and Supro lap steels among many others) and has a Supro-style pickup in it. I owned one for a while - they can be nice sounding steels if the pickup is working properly.
It looks to be in good, but not excellent condition. The tuner buttons will have to be replaced; perhaps the built in cord as well. I think it's worth much less than the Buy It Now price of $739 USD that the seller is asking. _________________ Brad’s Page of Steel

Valco, Dave. Read through this page from not long ago. There's a link which will help you date your guitar(s), too. I have a 53 Valco/Gretsch with the old type cord and was thinking of selling it until I restrung it and turned it up. Beautiful tone and quite different from the sound of my Valco/National.
If you're looking at the Gretsch Electromatic for Buy It Now $739, that's probably more than double what it's worth. My 53 is in mint condition with original tuners in pretty good shape and I got it for $300.

I was checking out Ebay lap steels the other day, and couldn't believe the prices those clowns want for old plain-jane guitars. When it get up towards a grand, time to buy a new one from one of the builders on here, like Tom Pettingill, etc. |
