I have a Toshiba Satellite with Windows Vista and the headphones won't work (the headphones themselves work fine). Any ideas??

Does the Laptop's internal speakers work OK?

No use going any further until that is clarified.

Also what happened, did it work and you installed something or uninstalled something? Or has the headphone jack never worked?

The speakers on the computer itself are fine as well. I had top replace my harddrive, and the phones have not worked since. It may just be something simple, but I suck with computers, hence the request for advice>>>>

When you replaced the hard drive, did you correctly reinstall everything. In general when you reinstall, using discs, on most systems you (1)Install Windows (2) Install motherboard chipset drivers (3) Install device drivers such as sound, video, etc.

If you reinstalled and let Windows install drivers sometimes the drivers installed, especially the sound, are not always the best drivers and some functions may not work.

In the sound chip, many of the newer "HD Audio" systems have automatic sensing if anything is connected such as a headset and automatically switch the output to the headset. For this reason, installing the OEM Vendor's sound drivers are a must and a first step to resolving the problem. Even if the sound drivers on the Toshiba downloads are the same version as you have, install them and then restart the PC and see if it makes a difference.

I didn't do the install myself, I took it to Staples. I think I should probably go back to Staples where the work was perforned, and have them take a look at it.

That sounds like a good "first step". They probably did not properly reinstall.

I used Staples once for a computer problem. Never again.
