That was Danny Dugmore on the Fender. Most of the band was made up of session guys. Prob the ones that cut the track. |

Randle Currie was playin' steel for Brad Paisley and Mike Daily was playin steel for George Strait. Mike Johnson was on steel when Loretta, Sheryl Crow, and Miranda Lambert were onstage.

geesh... taylor can sing and she can write..she has very long career in front of her with no momma in the business to help her get started or to insure she got a break...She did it the hard way and she is surviving, and bringing new fans to Country music... Taylor started with Country, where did GP start ? Country Music ? Did she just start with Vince next to her or did she get a job in a movie first ?
I thought this thread was about GP ? Don't get me wrong, I love GP but adding TS to this thread is really over the top, sorry...GP is a movie star first...and will end her career as a movie star. _________________ Emmons L-II , Fender Telecasters, B-Benders , Eastman Mandolin ,

In defense of GP, not that she needs it, yes, she does have a momma in show business, Blythe Danner, but momma is in the movie business, not music, so it's dubious how much momma helped GP as far as her singing career goes. GP sang in one movie in 2000, "Duets" with Huey Lewis. To my knowledge she has not done anything else as a singer until now. I stand by my opinion that in regards to the show, she gave them all a singing lesson …... |

She can sing, she's very pretty, and the band was top-notch.
I can't put my finger on exactly why, but I just didn't care for it. Maybe it's the song, which seems so "made for TV". |

A very, very high percentage of actors and actresses have sang all along, it's just that their career tweaked towards movies.... Merly Streep did a great job in "Postcards from the Edge", and the "Walk the Line" kids Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon did a good job too. Jeff Bridges, Colin Farrell and Robert Duvall, "Crazy Heart." Most of these kids in Hollywood were in every high school play & musical show they could manage. Didn't everybody grow up wanting to be a star? |

When I did the "Always Patsy" shows they brought in two Broadway professional actresses. One was from Les Miserable. They had amazing poise. They both sang better than 90% of pop country singers. The lead nailed Patsy Cline having never before sung it. She told me that she locked herself in a room for a month and studied the phrasing. Still, its a sad thing when a Hollywood actress can out sing the suppossed CMA female country singer of the year. |

Her version of Smokey Robinson's "Cruisin'" went to number one on the charts in Australia and "Bette Davis Eyes" reached number three on the charts in Australia, about 9 years ago. In the 2006 film Infamous, she sang "What Is This Thing Called Love". In the 2010 season of Fox's "Glee" she plays a substitute teacher and sings Cee Lo Green's "Forget You", a version of "Singin' In the Rain" and Rihanna's "Umbrella".
Also she is married to a very, very successful singer, Chris Martin(four multi-platinum albums and over 50 million albums sold in the past ten years). _________________ http://www.oldbluesound.com/about.htm

My take on it was GP stole the thunder from the divas. Now I'm not that inclined to give movie stars, race car drivers, et al that much singing credit going in. They have to earn it. But she nailed it, on pitch and with soul. The caveat is that she seemed to aim her performance more to a country style while the rest of them aimed theirs at a pop/rock audience. _________________ LeGrande II, Nash. 112, Fender Twin Tone Master, Session 400, Harlow Dobro, R.Q.Jones Dobro |

Sounds like she probably practiced it a few times while locked in that room.
Here's my take.
I felt like GP did a great job. Her intonation was good (although I did hear a couple of feedback squeaks from poor mic technique), and she was def not as shaky as some of the Nashville-based singers that performed on the show.
However.
She really didn't branch out very much melodically. Even on the recording, it's pretty basic. I can't see any singer in town securing a record deal with such a vocal performance. Sorry, but there is very little soul on that record. Most of the soul that I'm hearing is from VG's bgv's.
Bottom line is that she did great on the awards, but I don't see it as being anything more than a promo for the movie. |
