Finally received a case from http://www.pedalsteelproducts.com/cases.html - in case anyone else needs a case - and it's like something you'd check your bazooka in. Turns out to be a Pelican 1700 http://www.pelican.com/cases_detail.php?Case=1700 for $199.
Anyway, it's full of foam: the lid has a layer and there are two layers in the bottom. The wheels (yea!) have two slant places inside, so that could help hold up the keyhead end off the bottom. Could cobble up a support for the changer end.

How realistic is it to carve out a "hole" for my steel in this foam? The case is plenty wide and I'd need to make a cubby for the leg pouch. The foam is that dark firm kind, not what you find in a pillow. Is there hope of working this stuff? (Other than shaping it with a torch Smile I don't think a carpet knife would trick the do either... Any insight would be appreciated!

Oh, the guy said (don't they all?) the price is going back up soon...

Electric Knife. Make sure to use some PAM or silicon lube on it and take your time. Works great.

I've done gun cases with that type of foam. I roughed out the cuts with an electric knife, and then finished them with an Exacto knife with a long blade. There are also Exacto saws that will do the job quite nicely.

Yeah, it really is a gun case, but that's a good thing Smile They and steels are tough with some tender parts. The vendor replied that the foam is made of small blocks that can be pulled out - who would have thought? This just made the case a whole lot easier!
The top and bottom (of 3) layers are solid, but having a void worked out in the middle will make a good template for working the other layers. A much simpler project, for sure! Thanks for the ideas, they will be handy Winking
