Does anyone know the best way to get a white fretboard for a '74 Marlen? I haven't measured yet, but I can if necessary. Not sure if Leonard made them in different scales. _________________ Marlen S12 pedal steel

Georgeboards has vinyl peel and stick fret boards in various lengths. They can be applied over an existing fretboard. I have used them on a steel I built, and they work great. |

Of course, when you replace a fretboard, you should make certain that you have the 12th. exactly where it should be. Tommy..... |

Thanks all!
I haven't replaced a fretboard on a steel yet so I'm not sure exactly what I'm doing.
When I wrote this post I was thinking about preparing for dark rooms/outdoor night gigs coming up. But then I remembered when I had a fender with a chrome board. I had alot of trouble under stage lights because the strings would cast shadows that looked liked strings and would confuse me. Maybe I've moved beyond that (relying less on my eyes), but it really messed with me on a few gig.
Does anyone ever change out fretboards? White for dark gigs and dark for gigs under bright lights?
(Maybe this is a silly question and I should get back in the woodshed) _________________ Marlen S12 pedal steel

Andrew, here's an inexpensive, easy solution to the chrome fretboard problem that worked for me (assuming that you have a black fretboard with chrome fret markings like I did)...
1. Go to any auto parts store and buy 1/8" wide, white automotive pinstripe tape (about $3 for 36 feet).
2. Remove your guitar strings.
3. Carefully apply the pinstripe tape to the frets. I found that using a tweezers was very helpful to keep the tape straight and taut as you press it into place.
4. I laid the tape completely across the fretboard (all the way to both edges) for maximum visibility, and used a small sharp scissors to trim the excess.
Don't worry if you make any mistakes--with 36 feet of pinstripe tape you will have plenty left over!
The tape adheres well but is not permanent, so you (or the next owner) can remove it to return the guitar to its original condition.

I’ve actually got a few Marlen fretboards in at least two sizes. |
