Only six solid-neck Weissenborn Hawaiian guitars are known to exist, making them rarer than even the teardrop models. These guitars are smaller overall compared with conventional Weissenborns, but still retain the 25-inch string length. Three of the six have a body depth of only 2.5 inches and exhibit features comensurate with Weissenborn's pre-1920 guitars. When a photo turned up a few months ago of Hermann's wife, Concepcion, playing one of these small solid-neck instruments, several questions were raised by Tony Francis and me. Besides the question of who taught her to play the steel, we wondered what input,if any, she had in the design of her instrument. Tony and I began collaborating to re-create this charming little guitar. It is nearing completion now, and its story and photos can be found at http://www.tonyfrancisinstruments.blogspot.com/2010/11/solid-neck-weissenborn-part-3.html

Hi Tom,
I never knew that Mr. Weissenborn built solid neck Hawaiian guitars. It looks like a interesting project. I'm guessing that they can be played in the spanish position as well as flat. I'll be sure to keep an eye on It. Thanks for posting. R.Y |

What an interesting project Tom...I've been fascinated by this guitar since I first saw that picture of Mrs. Weissenborn playing one.
I cooresponded with Tony about an unrelated matter recently and I know he is very proud of this effort and I'm sure you will be happy with the results, he's a artist to be sure.
Can't wait to see the finished product... |

I was under the impression that this was a round neck guitar similar to A Kona, but I see from Tony Francis blog that It has a solid square neck, therefore it can't be played in the spanish position. R.Y |
