I just had another GAS attack and purchased an 8 string Goldtone resonator guitar. It's coming from Banjo.com in Atlanta, GA.
This guitar is a collaberation between Goldtone and Beard and I am anxious to give it a try.
I would like to put a pickup on it but the choice is still up for grabs. I contacted Fishman about their new setup but they thought it wouldn't work on an 8 stringer. They suggested just going wiht the little doughnut pickup.

Yes, I have wondered about these. Let us know how she sounds?

These are great guitars if you want that eight string tuning option in a resophonic guitar. I played one at the Texas Steel Guitar Jamboree and was very impressed. The default tuning is:
1. D
2. B
3. G
4. E
5. D
6. B
7. G
8. E
Gold Tone sells these with an optional Fishman pickup installed. You might contact them for details.
<b>note: corrected to show the proper tuning.</b> _________________ Brad’s Page of Steel

Brad,
Thanks SO much for the info.
I tune my resonators one tone higher as I learned lap on the A major tuning. I believe Bashful Brother Oswald used the same tuning. |

Brad, what's with that 6th string? Is it tuned high like the 3rd? Or low? Or is that a typo??
Thank you,....PJ..... |

It looks like he turned the 6 and 7 strings around.
I tune mine to an A6th like this:
E
C#
A
F#
E
C#
A
E |

They are great guitars for the money (especially the ones that we set up )
The Douglas bridge pickup will NOT work on the 8 string unfortunately. I hope one day they can develop a pickup along those lines. I am patiently waiting myself.

Howard,
The optional Fishman pickup you can get on the guitar, is that the little doughnut one that goes on the cone? |

We offer either the passive or active Fishman "Classic" (aka the donut) cone mount pickup. I don't know what Gold Tone is doing.
The active is a more consistent performer imho. We would route out the lower bout, player side and install a battery compartment, similar to Taylor and Martin. Battery replacement becomes a snap.
