I bought a Melobar 8 string awhile back and the PU was especially weak at the 1st and 8th string. The bridge and nut were not very goodas well.So i had a custom Pu made for the guitar, made a new nut and bridge from solid brass, spent a lot of time on little details to make the guitar sound good.Just got it done today, plugged it in and what a letdown!!!.The amp i play with was set up the same as i do for my 6 string Magnatone.I set the 8 str the same as the 6 and the volume difference was much lower, and the 1st string was real tinny,2nd str a little weak, but livable.Could the volume and tone controls have an effect???.The new PU is a real good one but the sound is almost the same as what is was before..??????HELP...
Carl Confused Confused

Yes...volume pots, tone pots and all connections and wiring have a place in how the guitar performs. I'd check / replace the 1/4" jack; look at all the solder joints; clean the pots with a good solvent containing silicon, and be sure that the amp I'm plugged into is expecting to 'see' the signal I'm sending it. What is the ohms reading for the pickup? What amp do you use?

Hope this asks a right question!

The DC Resistance is 5.8 k ohms/ w/ 600 windings. The amp i plug into is the same as i use for my Magnatone with all settings set the same on amp and full volume on both guitars..

Volume and Tone controls can definitly have an effect on the sound, but it seems unlikely it would effect just one or two strings. Are the strings in question over the magnets/pole pieces? Same height as the other strings?

Have installed the new pu ,adjusted the height etc, but have determined that i need a different style of pu for this application, one with adjustable poles,so will have to route out the guitar to allow for the new model..Carl Oh Well
