Hi guys, I just acquired a nice Fender Custom T-8 and need to replace all the strings. I plan to use
C6/Am7 Tuning:
1. G
2. E
3. C
4. A
5. G
6. E
7. C
8. A / Bb
A6 Tuning:
1. E
2. C#
3. A
4. F#
5. E
6. C#
7. A
8. F#
E13 Tuning:
1. E
2. C#
3. B
4. G#
5. F#
6. D
7. G#
8. E
I'm sure this has been covered a million times, but where can I look up the gauges to use on this short scale guitar and what string do you recommend, I'm leaning towards nickel. Should I consider using a different tuning than the 3 I mentioned? Thanks guys.

Here's a good reference from John Ely: String Gauge Chart. FWIW, the C6 set is based on Cindy Cashdollar's preferences, and John Ely believes some of her choices have too much tension. |

Greg, I have one of those guitars, too. I use E9(similar to yours, except E B G# F# D B G# E) which becomes E13 when I tune string 2 up to C#; C6 (I change the bottom 3 strings' tuning frequently) and use E for my first string; and the 3rd neck I experiment with. I think at this moment it is C13 like you listed. But I'm also experimenting with some new tunings
As far as string gauges, b0b sells string sets here (he even has a nickel set), and Scotty's also has strings sets made by SIT that are available at Just Strings. If you want to check for yourself, John Ely's website has a string gauge chart:

That's a nice looking old Fender. Congratulations. The tunings you listed are my prefences(kind of). I do like the Don Helms E6th if you're going to cover the Hank stuff. It is simply the C6th intervals taken up to E. I find it is good for a lot of other things. It covers the old E classic instrumentals nicely and on strings 2 and 3, it has the right timbre for some of the A6th ting a ling. The chords on the lower strings are nice and bright. I would suggest you use as heavy a string as possible for the particular pitch if you are going for the vintage sound. The old guys played their strings pretty tight, Jerry Byrd being the exception. Don Helms did tune his 8th to A. Sometimes I do, sometimes not. _________________ LeGrande II, Nash. 112, Fender Twin Tone Master, Session 400, Harlow Dobro, R.Q.Jones Dobro |

This is big news. I can not wait to hear your apply your wonderful harmonic sense to these tunings, Greg. I love what you do with your high G tuning with the E bass. Good luck for this journey. |
