I've noticed over the years that the pedal rods are bent to produce a hook where they connect to the bell-cranks..Wouldn't it be better if these were bent in such a way as to make it more -eye- shaped instead of a hook...This way the rod would hang straight,, (where needed) with no binding and produce less wear...Just a thought.........Carson

I hear ya Carson.

But it also carries with it a caveat:

Quality builders have tried to make setting up and tearing down of a PSG as fast and easy as can be. Because of the very limited space such as an Emmons LeGrande, this could create a serious problem, since there is barely enough space as it is; particularly with ever more pedals and knee lever changes.

Also, not all use hooks. Early Sierra's and MSA Millineums use ball joints at both ends of the pedals rods.

It would mean yet another rod to stock. I imagine PSG manufacturers would balk, but not sure.

Finally, MOST predal rods are not 90 degrees vertical because of the "cant" of their legs. This means that EVEN with eye hooks the pedal would STILL be pulling the rods at an angle. Causing "said" wear.

Check out the photos to see how MSA does it. And then look at how Excel does it, and notice then the mew Mullen G2 and how it does it. I believe your idea might work on these new beauties.

These guitars ajust pedal height with those large knurled wheels. Neat huh? No wrenches neeeded here! Whoa!

On Excel's, the top of a bent pedal rod fits into a slot milled into the front rail. I just don't believe an open eye hook would fit in there. Not sure.

Click on the link

http://www.mullenguitars.com/g2.htm

Scroll down until you see how the pedal rods fit into a hole of a flat piece of steel plate that then is screwed to the crossrod crank.

Now your idea would probably work on these guitars. But again, the pedal rods pull at an angle.

I promise you, I am NOT trying to burst your bubble dear friend, Smile

Why try to bend the rods into a round shape when rod end fittings already exist, and have been used for over fifty years by several makers -- Bigsby and BosSan are two that start with the letter B.

Carson, My guess is that manufacturers went to bent rod ends was to save costs. The way MSA has it, is really the way to go. Ingenious in my opinion. Not only does it look more finished and neat, but it makes pedal height adjustment a breeze.

This is the first time I've seen the new system of hooking up the pedal rods...What a great idea...I also didn't know that a system such as this has been around for a long time...Regards,,,Carson

Also you don't have to number the rods for specific pedals, just pick one up, and put it on. They are all the same length.
