Hey all,
I'm excited to share my experiences with the Dobro Hound Dog that has been of interest in the forums recently.
I picked one up a couple weeks ago on a whim and after trying to find info about it...decided to offer a demo video--complete with lots of live playing--with accompanying article found here
Hope you enjoy it, and look to see more of this guitar in upcoming lessons and entertainment I have planned for this winter.
Aloha,
Josh

Good review Josh. Reviews like this are a big help to beginners looking to purchase an inexpensive instrument.
As I mentioned in another thread, one of my concerns with the inexpensive instruments is the consistency of quality and setup from instrument to instrument. An important consideration for a beginner buying an instrument, especially sight unseen.
How was the setup out of the box of the instrument you reviewed? |

Dave,
Hey thanks for your insightful comments.
Yes I agree that you do have to be concerned about instruments made overseas, however, the concern I have is with "no name" imports.
As to my guitar's setup: I took an even bigger risk and scooped up a used one.
Luckily, the guitar was barely played, it just needs to have the strings changed.
I'll record another video once the strings are swapped out for new, I think it will brighten up the tone even more.

It sounded pretty good in the video, new strings should be even better. |

Hey J. Wilson, thanks for the comment...you know it was largely due to your post that I made my little demo video...did you ever pick up that Hound Dog?
And, yes, there's more Dobro material on the way.
Aloha,

Not yet Josh, no. The situation has been complicated by the introduction of other options!
...but no final decision has been made.

Ok, J I understand.
So meanwhile, head back over to the Hound Dog page, I've just uploaded some purely acoustic recordings of this very guitar, using a Tascam digital recorder.
Scroll down to the middle of the page for the mp3 soundclip.
Here's the page again:

Have a listen and then get back to me with your thoughts.

Nice! The low end has a genuine warmth. I like your earlier assessment about how this guitar would be excellent for a guitar-on-the-go.
Acoustically, The mids are not as pronounced, however, I believe this has to do with the wood? Is that a correct assumption?
Is there a rhythm track in the background? _________________ If Music Be the Food of Love, Play On. -Shakespeare

No this entire clip was recorded purely acoustically and solo, no effects, with the Tascam GT-R1's onboard mics pointed between the f-hole and the resonator cone, as seen in the small picture above the soundclip.
