Hi Lee
I've read that on the early Buck Owens recordings, Ralph played a homemade steel, with Magnatone pickup(s)....Jerry

I do believe you are correct Jerry. And if my memory serves me right, I do not believe he had any knee levers at that time.

Somewhere on this forum there is a tuning setup that Ralph used. You may wish to use the search feature and find it. Note: it may take awhile since it was a long time ago as I recall.

Good luck Lee,

c.

Al Brisco (steel guitars of canada) or Joey Ace probably has the answer you are looking for on the set up.

Yes, Moon recorded the early Wynn and Buck stuff on a homemade steel. Leo gave him a new Fender and took his old one to see " how it got its tone".When Moon showed up at one of Buck's session with the new Fender Buck wouldn't let him use it. He insisted that Moon get his old homemade one to record with. And of course the rest of that story is that Moon drilled a hole through the head of the Fender and added another string. Leo did not appreciate that and that was the end of Moon and Fender.

If I remember correctly, Moon told me that steel he used was burned up in the fire, and buried in the desert.Curtis

I think Mr Mooney was the first to raise the high "E" to "F#" with a pedal, and was the first to go with a high "G#" as the first string, which he raised to "A" with a pedal. He also raised the "B's" to "C#" with a pedal. Think those were his most used changes in the early days. Only one string was raised per pedal...Jerry

AND he used both feet. And often still does. Bless his heart. He was truly one of THE most unique PSG players in history.

May Jesus richly bless him for what he brought to the musical world,

Does anyone have a picture of Moon's extra string on his fender? I was thinking of doing the same thing.

Very Happy
The one time that I got to see Mr Ralph Mooney,& talk to him, was at Tulare,California,he played a show with Buck, just the two of them,..He was on a Fender 1000 with the biggest Fender amp I ever saw,.
Ralph played several instrumentals that night, some
Hank Williams songs..He played with lofer moccsins
on his feet, used a Fender volume pedal,..He played
with both feet on the pedals most all of the time..
He said he raised all the strings up from the open
position except one..That one being the the 1st string from G# down to G. All the other strings were
the 1st from G# to A,, the 2nd from E to F#,,The 3rd
B to C#,, again, the 1st from G# lower to G,. in that
order..& each pedal operated only the one string..
Now gang ,that was back in 1959, I myself was doing
some playing steel with Buck Owens, at the "Barn"in
Fresno,& Buck told Mooney to show me how he tuned his
steel,.I could never think of trying to both raise
& lower that.009" string as they did not last too
long,.. I gave the job to Jay MacDonald when we came
back home to Michigan in 1961,. Hope this helps some.
Mr Moon is my all time favorite, & he drove us all"up
the wall" back then., Best new sound I ever heard..

I've heard Moon used a Vice Grip as a foot pedal, too.
