If David is anything like me (and we know we are both old David ) , bedtime is not a time of the day, but rather the number of hours between naps. ZZZZzzzzzzzzz....
Thanks for the heads up. Got the DVR set to record. I would never had thought to tune in. _________________ Carter D10 8p/8k, Dekley S10 3p/4k C6 setup,Regal RD40 Dobro, Recording King Professional Dobro, NV400, NV112,Ibanez Gio guitar, Epiphone SG Special (open D slide guitar) . Anyone know what group he will be with? I recall well hearing Ray Stevens do Misty in that blue grass style. What an arrangement that was!
But, before risking staying up past 11:00 I'd like to know who will be with them and are they doing more than one tune? |

Mathis has a new country album, released Sept 23rd.
Paul Franklin is on it.
One tune is a duet with Allison Krauss. |

Jim Saunders,
Sounds like a big risk staying up past 11, gee, it's only Jay Dee one of the best steel players out there, might try recording it, by the way, the Misty song, well jay dee and a band he was working with back in the day did the arrangement of misy for a break song, and as I remember the story Ray heard it and that was the premise of the way He recorded it, and got a Grammy for it.. So Jim.S.. , live it up tonight!!!.. or do as I'm doing today.... Napping for the Big event tonight!!!

I just saw Jay Dee's playing on the tonight show. What a fantastic job!! He was featured throughout the song and for a somewhat lengthy solo; not just a quick turn-around. Nice to see PSG showcased so well.
Also couldn't help but notice he was playing his trusty Push-Pull Emmons (polished up and looking sharp) through an older Peavey amp. It looked like a Session 400. When it really has to sound sweet, that combo is hard to beat. |

The video has been blocked by NBC on copyright grounds. Dang, I wanted to see it too! I had the channel all set and I was in my recliner but sometime after the start of the show I fell asleep and missed it. I hope it's rerun again...........JH in Va. _________________ Don't matter who's in Austin (or anywhere else) Ralph Mooney is still the king!!! |

Red thanks for letting us all know of this. If the steel could just be presented in this positive fashion and highlighted on a constant basis in songs on TV like it should be we would start to see things turn around quickly in all areas of interest in steel guitar.
This was a rarity in that the show normally has terrible music at the end and this was pleasing quality sound with a melody. What a novel idea? Hence the audience there stands and applauds as I expect most living rooms did throughout the US where the show was broadcast and viewed. Good music and quality entertainment is really not that complicated, just hard to find due to it's rarity anymore.
What was interesting also a man sang the song and the music that you would not suspect to hear singing it. What a pleasant surprise. More artists and singers should maybe listen to some good country songs and apply their talent to some good quality writing and soulful melody. Add the steel and it can not fail to appeal to everyone . _________________ A beautiful Laquer Mullen G2, 2 Nashville 112's, Evans 10" R150 Amp,1982 Emmons Push Pull D-10, Hilton Pedals, 12/8 MSA Superslide, Green LDG, S-6 Fender 1956 Lap. , Gretsch Country Gentleman, red Gibson 2019, ES 335, Quilter, Gretsch Resonator, Eastman Mandol |

David Wright, I made it through the show and it was worth it. Wow! J.D. was prominately featured on camera. Not hidden backstage. The rest of the band was great too. And Peter, thanks for the recording. I don't know how you techies do it, but I'm glad you did.
I bought the CD yesterday at Borders. |

fwiw, I just watched at that link Peter F. provided above (click on the upper image).
Looks like he has a Matchbox on the leg of his Steel, and a Conn strobe tuner laying on it's back.
Is that a Nashville 1000? |

I guess you can call me one of the lucky guy's , I
stayed awake and saw the show , I think they were featuring jay Dee instead of Johnny Mathis .
They had him set up front , nothing blocking the view of the steel , his black Emmons , he played
the break , what tone .
Maybe this is the break we have been waiting for ,
not hiding the steel on tv shows , amen

Peter Burak asked: "Is that a Nashville 1000?"
I think the answer is no, but I am not 100% certain. The cabinet has the two broad silvery vertical bands, like the older Peaveys. I have never seen a Nashville 1000 that had those features. Also, the control panel is identical to my Session 400 and the lettering on the upper right of the control panel seems to be consistent with "Session 400". But I can't really read it. Could also be a Vegas 400. The cabinet does not look tall enough to be a Session 500, but I have heard the earlier Session 500 had a smaller cabinet; so maybe.
Of course, Jay Dee's playing skills are overwhelmingly the primary contributing factor to his great tone. |
