I've been playing around with converting an old tube amp from a 1956 reel-to-reel for a non-pedal steel amp. I found a great old Ampro movie projector cabinet with a Magnavox speaker (must be from the 40's). It sounds extremely cool, but the speaker is a little rattly and I may need to get it reconed. In the meantime, what's a reasonable replacement speaker?. I'd like to avoid spending too much, but if I found a good one, I'd could just skip reconing the old Magnavox.
The amp is a single-ended 6V6 circuit and probably pushes 7 watts or less. I think it's set up for 4 ohm output, but it sounds mighty good through my 8 ohm guitar combo speaker.
Any advice appreciated.

What size speaker do you need? I have an Eminence Alph8 8 ohms speaker that is new. I bought it as a spare speaker for my Evans AE-100 amp but I've never needed it. I'll take $35 shipped. Just let me know.

I have an old Magnatone amp with the same 1 x 6V6 configuration. It puts out 4 or 5 watts - don't remember the ohms but the Jensen P8R I installed sounds really sweet in it. I use it frequently in the studio for lap steel. Any vintage style alnico speaker would probably work great. Weber, Eminence or Jensen. I watch my local Craig's List daily and have found some great deals on speakers. |

It's a 12" speaker. I took it out and inspected it this morning and there seems to be sort of yoke at the bottom of the cone that's come unglued and is probably causing some rattle. I'm going to carefully reglue it and see how it works. I still might end up with a replacement because I think there are more appropriate speakers for it. _________________ John Allison

Weber Signature Series 12 with an alnico magnet. I'm using the same speaker in a 5E3 Tweed Deluxe clone, and it has that "olde" sound. |

That Weber looks like just the ticket. I may try a replacement just to keep the oririnal from getting overworked.
For now it sounds great - at low volume it's absolutely creamy somooth and at just that point where the tubes start straining, and the speaker is just on the edge of breaking up, it's absolutely the coolest...and it's reasonably loud.
I'm hoping I can take this thing out and gig with it. Of course, I'll have to mike it through the PA and it'll need good monitors because I don't think I'll be able to hear it over the rhythm section on it's own.
I was able to build the chassis into the back of the cabinet - very cool little set up. I'll post a couple of pics when I get a chance.
Thanks for the help... _________________ John Allison
