nice clean playing. I play a few of the songs you're doing, but not half as well as you do. Keep up the good work. Larry

Nice Michael!

I'm curious about something....what is it about "Secret Love" that has made it become such a big number to play for steel players? There's a lot of great standards out there, but yet SL is one of the most played by our little club. I don't think it's particularly touched upon by other instrumentalists as much as by us.

I liked your "Stella" too!

Hi Rick,

Secret Love is popular with players of other instruments. There is the fast vocal version by Bob Dorough and there is a version by alto saxophonist Lou Donaldson. I think it's popular with steel players because the head is easy to play, but please don't tell anyone. Thanks for listening.

Cool Michael! Don't get me wrong, I like the tune just fine, and your version is very nice. I was just noticing when I went to the only steel convention that I've ever been to, that I must've heard SL at least 5 times a day.

Rick,

I've been to the steel show in CT a few times. Outside of that,I'm out of the loop. I don't know what goes on in Nashville, I dont listen to steel radio, and there are only a few steel players in this area, whom I don't care about. So,I didn't know that,My Secret Love was over played. Thanks for sharing, I won't play it anymore.

Ha....No don't do that Michael. I guess I just used your post to vent my questions about that tune.

Sorry if I seemed negative at all. I do the tune myself sometimes. If it sounds good, and your version does....keep playing it! Cool

Not at all Rick. I have plenty of material,I don't need MSL at all. I prefer to play tunes other players aren't playing. I've never heard another steel player play "Stella,"but again,I'm out of the loop.

Nothing wrong with Secret Love. Danny Gatton does a nice version on his instructional video. I think he and Buddy covered that with Redneck Jazz as well.
Great song and very nice version.

Reece almost owns that song. Been playing it live for many years. I think the chord changes make it such a great number to play.

Michael - you do a great job too. Smile

Thanks Ken. You are kind and generous. My playing has been on again, off again. I stopped playing throughout the 90's and picked it up again in 2003. As a result, I've been out of loop, not knowing who's who or what's what. Thanks again.
