Be sure to add that info when you nominate him, Kevin.

Kevin,

One thing to consider when you nominate Dan (who is absolutely a great candidate) is that the 'Hall of Fame' is the 'St. Louis International Steel Guitar Convention Hall of Fame', it's not like the Baseball Hall of fame, or the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The folks that are inducted to the 'St. Louis International Steel Guitar Convention Hall of Fame' represent the steel players that are most important to the St. Louis Steel convention. The folks who vote on these nominations have their own rules. It's not a democracy. One of the factors to consider is that if a steel player has never played the St. Louis Steel Convention, it's relatively harder to get in. Because it's the 'St. Louis International Steel Guitar Convention Hall of Fame', not the 'Steel Guitar Hall of Fame'.

I really don't have any objection to this. It's their party, they can choose whoever they want, based on the private rules of the organization.

But everybody should know that this isn;t anything like the Baseball Hall of Fame, Football Hall of Fame, etc. This is simply a forum for the St. Louis Steel Convention organization to recognize players that are important to the convention.

I would like to add that the solo on Blue Bayou is a stroke of brilliance, not only for how beautiful it sounds, but for the economy of how many notes were needed to do that.

All I can say Dan is that I hope that they consider his long career. Its really amazing when you see the people he has toured with and recorded with. Dan Dugmore is Dan Dugmore.
I am at the airport in Buffalo waiting in the lobby and there he is on "Blue Bayou" coming over the P.A. I get off the plane in New York and I'm going down the escalator and there he is again on Martina McBride's "Wild Angels". Then I get in a cab and there he is again with Brooks and Dunn on "Red Dirt Road". The only other steel player I can say that about is Paul Franklin, and I'm thinking to myself that this is amazing, because I always have my ear tuned in for steel guitar on the radio. How many other steel players can you say that about over a 40 year period?

The "Blue Bayou" solo resonates with us because its approach has everything we steel players want to possess: fluidity, poise, concentration, taste, and passion.

Dan, my old friend
As a member of the SGHOF Board, I feel obligated to inform you, and the entire Forum, that what you stated in the above paragraph could not possibly be further from the truth!

Frankly, I'm totally dismayed that you chose to make that statement, which at best is repeating what must be a completely false rumor and is definitely spreading dis-information.

The SGHOF's legal name is The International Steel Guitar Hall of Fame, Inc.. There is no requirement, stated in print or otherwise, that an inductee must, should, has previously, or will in the future play at the Convention. I can offhand think of many inductees, just in the time I've served on the Board, who've never played the convention and in some cases no longer play the instrument at all.

The Board only considers the nomination documents and the personal knowledge of the committee members to make the oftentimes very difficult decisions to which we arrive. Member of the committee are chosen based on their participation (for decades) in the steel guitar world, general knowledge of steel guitar history, thier fairness, and an absence of personal agenda.

One statement you did make, however, is true: the SGHOF is not a democracy; it is a private corporation and its decisions are based on the criteria set by the committee and its By-Laws.

Include that information in your nomination documents and it will be considered. It is as Herb said:

Amen to Jim Vest..Herb your explanation is clear ..However If it is as stated, a voted by committee decision to whom enters my question is??..Why is it the general steel playing public needed to nominate candidates?? As stated above it is not a democracy.. ..Certainly if the general public is asked to nominate but have no vote,Have no say who enters anyway.. What sense does that make?.I'm perfectly sure that Scotty, and company know who the deserving players are..All that are entered are deserving but there are obvious ommisions...

Sorry for the mis-information and thanks for the correction, Herb. I do know that there are a number of inductees who never played the convention. What I was really trying to get at is that the ISGHOF is a private organization. They can elect anybody they want. It's not like the Baseball HOF where there is a voting process amoung a group of people that aren't associated with the museum. I know that there isn't a connection between playing the convention and the ISGHOF. But I do wonder if guys like Dan Dugmore and Sonny Garrish would be more on the minds of the board if they played the St. Louis show.

Them plaques ain't cheap. The SGHOF is a non-profit organization, financed by donations. They can only induct 2 or 3 people each year.

I'm told that the nominations are in and the recipients are already chosen for the following year at the convention..I can see where time is needed to have the plaques made..

I've down loaded the format and I'm working on it now. So far in 2010 amongst many others, Dan is on the new Keith Urban, Gary Allen, and Montgomery Gentry albums. Little Big Town and Bon Jovi albums also, and 2010 ain't over yet. Livingston Taylor album also.

I'm still looking to shake the hand of the person who nominated Barabara Mandrell (I guess I don't get it... why it's like a secret or something... I'd be like, Yep, that was me!).
I feel this addition paves the way for the Dan Dugmores of the industry.
I fully believe that between, oh... maybe 2020 to 2030 or so?... we'll start seeing guys like Buddy Cage, Rusty Young, Jerry Garcia, being inducted... you know... cuz I think they have done as much or more to Furthur the popularity of the instrument and its players, as BM.

Joe Casey, Dan Dugmore was "famous" in 1977. He is a legend today. He passed "gazillion" years ago. You sound like you have a bone to pick.
