Does anyone know if there's a such thing as Unwound Strings? e.g., 0.064---this would be comparable to piano strings. |

I think that I've got some fencing wire that would fit the bill. |

The largest I know of is .059, or Size 25. You can get that at a piano repair supply store. |

A "garrote" can also be made with heavy fishing line. Sorry, couldn't resist, but seriously, Paul's probably on the right track. Might I ask what your planning to do with a heavy unwound string? |

I'm sure it's wound, though.
Even on a 10 string C6th tuning, the bottom string is usually a .068-.070 |

Thanks; my largest string is 064. Wound strings slow me down; I've been unable to locate FLAT WOUND strings; that would be an improvement. I move my bar a lot and the co-efficient of friction causes a big drag. Also, wound strings go dead after a while. Andy - are you related to the great trumpeteer Arturo? What a technique that dude has! About 8 - 10 yr ago, the Castro regime caught him listening to Radio America and had him put in jail 3 months. He later built a boat and came to USofA. |

Dr. Hugh -
I can steer you in one direction: http://www.juststrings.com/
From their homepage on the site click on "single strings" then "guitar strings" and it will lead you to a list of manufacturers.
I didn't search the entire list but D'Addario "Chromes" (flatwound) go up to .080 diameter. GHS has a "compound rollerwound" which also goes up to .080 diameter. I suspect that you know that the windings of the "rollerwounds" are flattened during the winding process yielding something between a round and a flat wound string. I use them myself since the tactile feel of the string is not as "harsh" as the garden variety round wound. Not much by way of tone is lost.
Frenchy's also has a roller-wound variety.
Hope this helps.
Respectfully,
Richard
OH! Since I've listened to your playing on Tilley's site, I can say that - in my opinion - you REALLY don't have to go any faster! |

Try Frenchy's Silent Wound strings. Work great for me. Jody. |
