Hello
Could anyone explain please,
I am understanding that it is the norm that the three standard floor pedals are A,B,C from left to right..
Knee leavers I seen named E,F,G, and RKL, RKR, LKL and LKR,
Am I understand the meaning of these right..
RKR would be the right knee leaver the one that will only go right, and RKL Right knee leaver the one that will only go left and so on,
Are all steels that are E9 tuning have the pedals and leavers doing the same thing? as in they all rise or lower on the same pedals and leavers..Im finding this hard to explain what I mean (tieing my self up in knots ) So what ever my A pedal dose it will do the same on someone else's that has E9 tuning,?
I sorry but being so knew to pedals Im not sure what string each pedal oe leavers alter,s
Hope you are able to understand what Im trying to ask..Thanks Paul uk |

There are two setups for the floor pedals. The "Emmons" setup (most common) and the "Day" setup. On the floor pedals the first pedal (left most) is the pedal that raises the 5th and 10th B strings and the Emmons is "ABC". On the Day setup the left most pedal raises the 4th E string and the 5th B string and the naming is "CBA".
The knee levers are not "standard". On most Emmons setups the LKL raises the E's to F and the LKR lowers the E's to Eb. However the knee lever that lowers the E's can also be on the RKL (which is considered the Sho-Bud location). On the Day setup the two levers to raise and lower the E's are reversed.
The naming (letter designation) for the knee levers is not standard. Commonly the knee lever that raises the E's to F is called the "F lever". But the lever that lowers the E's to Eb can be called the "D lever" or the "E lever" in many Tabs. My friend Don Sulesky in his tabs just refers to them by R for the lever that raises the E's and L for the lever that lowers the E's. |

Paul,
This is the usual way that the pedals and levers are designated:
'A' pedal raises strings 5 and 10 a tone
'B' pedal raises strings 3 and 6 a semitone
'C' pedal raises strings 4 and 5 a tone
'D' lever lowers string 2 a tone, and string 9 a semitone
'E' lever lowers strings 4 and 8 a semitone
'F' lever raises strings 4 and 8 a semitone
'G' lever lowers string 6 a tone, and raises string 1 a semitone
Note: the 'G' lever can vary considerably, sometimes it raises strings 1 and 7 a semitone.
Have a look at your steel, and see which levers do what.
If your LKL raises strings 4 and 8 a semitone, then that is your 'F' lever |

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fS2Fv4g4f4M&feature=related Paul,Jack is right on with what he is telling you ,but a lot of players have their guitars custom set up so your instruction material may not match your guitar.I assume you are learning on a pre owned guitar. My suggestion is to learn the copedent of that guitar.Heres a link to Mickey Adams, you can learn what the pedals and levers do,even tho they may not match your guitar. Are all pedal steel guitar set up the same? No. _________________ Gibson Les Paul

Paul, I wish I could hop on a plane and spend a weekend with you. You need to learn the rudimentary things fast so you can spend quality time on the really important stuff.
You live in Wales. It might be a 3 hour drive from Leicester. I know my buddy Dave Seddon would gladly show you this stuff, if you had some way of driving there.
Richard B, would you have the opportunity to go give our friend Paul a quick lesson?
How about John Roche..would you be able to help Paul out?
One way or the other, we'll get you going Paul _________________ BenRom Pedal Steel Guitars

Doesn't Dave Nutt live in South Wales?
He's the nearest player, I am 3 hours north, in Shrewsbury, but if Paul wants to make the trek, I can show him everything I know, as long as he has 10 minutes to spare |

Paul, I hope you're reading this. There are people out there who want to help you. You get hold of them and come to some agreement. You'll be up and running in no time. I wish you the best of luck my friend. I am happy that you transitioned to pedal steel. I am happy that you got your Carter. I bet you will end up loving it, and the learning and playing that comes with it.
Cheers!

Regards Paul...Ive just noticed in tiny print it says E leaver has a double stop and some pedals need to be tuned with two pedal's down..it gets worse and worse..

i also adopted those letters to the levers like Richard since they make sense
D lever lowers Eb to D on 2 (as well as C#)& D to C# on 9
E lever lowers the Es to Eb on 4 & 8
F lever raises the Es to F on 4 & 8
G lever raises F# to G or G# on 1 & 7- & some lower the G# to F# on 6
V(Vertical)lever lowers the Bs to Bb on 5 & 10

Hello again
Think Im getting some where now..
I have the sheet that came with the carter E9 tuning by Jeff Newman..
Working off their sheet with their names for leavers
Far left =F 4th and 8th string
Left =D 4th and 8th string
far Right E 2nd with double stop ( carnt see anything about moving string 9 )
Right G the sheet says 1 and 7 but it moves 1 and 6
X = 5th and 10th
So I now have the leaver names as defgx and which set of strings they do
Crowbareyou mention Quote "G lever raises F# to G or G# on 1 & 7- & some lower the G# to F# on 6
which is right or wrong And this is what Im kinda getting at if I follow someones tab and their setting is not the same then its not going to work..Could you let me know your thoughts...Tuning this thing carnt be that hard surley
I notice that the G leaver feels annd sounds like it has two stops the same as the E
thanks for you surport so far Regards Paul

Paul, you REALLY need to have a one to one lesson or two with someone..Before you go down the wrong road..I can't do it personally, but there are plenty in the UK who can. |

This is not difficult, you just make a note of what YOUR knee levers do, then on any tab that's different to YOUR configuration you just re-assign the names.
Just like when you drive a car that has 6 forward instead of 4 or 5, and the reverse gear is in a different slot, you can't rebuild the car so you re-think.
And "Tuning this thing" (as you put it) has nothing to do with the setup (copedent) of the pedals and knee levers.. Tuning the steel guitar is a completely different ball game, something for you to learn more about as you progress, BUT it does require a good tuner.. and some understanding of the 'off-sets' that are used. |

which is right or wrong ? |
there is no right or wrong
it's a matter of choice & what works for you
i raise string 1 F# to G# & F# to G on 7
i would say this one is most common ( F# to G# on 7 as well)
i get to lower G# to F# on 6 w: the "PF" pedal
as you can tell, i have both options
" PF" pedal lowers strings 5 & 10 a whole tone (Bs to A) as well as on 6 (G# to F#)
to begin w: Paul you'll be using the E F & D levers most
the others will follow once you've got the hang of those 3 |
