I just got home from a gig.We packed the house and had a great time. Before we started,I talked to another steeler that had come to see our show .He told me something I thought I would share. This is his quote, most steel guitar players never think one is better than the other and they are always willing to share. How true this has been for me.Thank you and good night.Elbo _________________ Gibson Les Paul

Isn't that the truth? We work like crazy to get it right in the heat of battle and all we remember on the way home is what we didn't quite pull off, while everybody else who was there is thinking about that sweet sound we made all night.... |

I've met a few competitive steelers, and they all had one thing in common:
They won't have anything to do with steel guitar conventions, clubs, halls of fame etc, indeed, I was quite shocked at how vitriolic one steeler was to players who were members of steel clubs.
Needless to say, none of them would deign to join this forum |

When I started to play pedal steel, back in the early to middle 70's, I taught myself the basics. I had a really good knowledge of the guitar, so, I adapted a rudimentary approach to it. Luckily, I found the PSGA and all it's wonderful members, who, were all too willing to help a beginner. I attended one of Jeff Newman's first seminars and several thereafter. There have been many more instructors to follow in Jeff's footsteps and they all have contributed to the advancement of the steel guitar. PSG instruction, was and still is evolving in a great way, thanks to all of these un-selfish people.
I'd been told ,that, in years prior, tunings and techniques were kept as big secrets. I'm glad that, that's not in favor anymore. I'm certainly not an end-all, cure-all when it comes to the PSG, but, I try to help anybody, who, needs help. I'm thankful it was there when I needed it, so, it's only right to pass on the knowledge. |

On another note concerning the integrity of the steel crowd, I was at my one and only big steel jam in Dallas 'bout three years ago. I was sitting in the back of the big room and lingered there after the crowd exited following the conclusion of the show. I happened to notice how clean the room remained. Even though there were drinks and eats in the room I saw only three paper drinking cups on the floor. That's saying a lot for the people. In contrast, ever notice the ground in a pro baseball dugout?...liter city!! _________________ J.R. Marlowe
