Hello David,
I like my Rogue Jersey Lightning a whole lot and they go for only $149.00 online. It's a faux copy of an 40s style Valco with modern features. I really love mine a lot.

I got a Stage One from Doug for one of my students. I had it for a few weeks before she picked it up and it was great. She brings it with her for lessons and it hardly ever needs tuning. I don't think it ever needed any adjustment at the bridge end.
Doug is great to work with. |

| Not that my endorsement would add a lot of credibility, since I don't play professionally, but IMHO you could do no better that a Stage One by Doug Earnest! I have been a big fan of pedal steel guitars since the 70's, had my own country-western band with several different steel players using Sho-Buds, Emmons, ZB's, MSA's and others for many years. I do know what tone in a good pedal steel is; I can't play very well yet, since I only began pickin' PSG slightly over a year ago, but as far as quality and tone go (especially if you run it thru a Goodrich matchbox) you will be greatly pleased with the Stage One. I have had a warranty issue with one of my knee levers before, but ole Doug sure took care of me in every way he could, offering not only replacement parts but also drawing diagrams for installation. I will have to vote for Stage One also. I have had two or three come through my shop for repair or adjustment through the years and was very impressed with them. (I said for repair...it was usually Owner Malfunction.) They are well built guitars and Doug isn't a bad old boy either.

imho, the Carter Starter is a perfectly respectable steel to learn on (much has been said here - pro and con - on said model)
the basics of psg: right hand picking/blocking, left hand bar movement, and foot pedalling can be developed just fine on a Carter Starter (the knee levers arouse controversy...)
one other point in the Starter's favour is that there are a goodly number of them out there, so they can be had quite affordably second hand...
just my 2 cents, as the Starter worked out well for me as a student instrument. |

Stage One Guitars get my vote also. These things sound amazing, have no tuning issues at all, look fantastic and are so reasonably priced I just can't imagine my life without it. Even if I can only sit down for 10 minutes it totally inspires me. I believe all Stage One Owners would agree and endorse these guitars. Much success to Doug.I recently re-strung her up with Jagwire Lloyd Greene strings. Pure heaven.

Your decision to go for a Carter Starter would have to based solely on your budget.
Although the Starter is no longer produced it's usually easy to find a used one.
Both the S1 and the CS are fairly priced.
The S1 is approx twice as much, and worth it. |

The S1 is twice as much "what" of a CS ?
A "NEW" StageOne over a "USED" Carter Starter ? Of coarse! A "NEW" StageOne over a "NEW" Carter Starter...NOT ! The ony thing twice as much is it's "TWICE AS MUCH GUITAR"!
Last time I had priced a CS it was about the same as a S1( maybe a $100 less ).....and that was without a case.It came in a plastic bag !
A new GFI with 3X2 was $200 more than a S1.
And a Jackson Blackjack was close to twice the $$$ as a S1.
I did the homework and bought what was best for me...and that was my StageOne !
