It has been eons since I had last attended Scotty's Steel Convention in St. Louis. I sure have missed an awful lot.
I enjoyed a set that Johnny Cox was playing in. I don't know who the singer was, a friend of Johnny's, but Johnny showed me why he is considered one the the best with his backup on the old tune, 'Take Me As I Am Or Let Me Go.' When someone enjoy's what they are doing it shows in their playing and Johnny seemed to be really enjoying himself.
I was living in Nashville, doing some steel guitar producing, back in the seventies when Johnny was there and barely old enough, I think, to get in to Julian Tharpe's Dee-Mens den. Those were the days, Johnny.
Right after producing the album, 'It's The First Time,' I talked to Johnny, Paul Franklin, Mike Jones and several other young steel players about doing a concept I had in mind that would have been called, 'I Bet You Never Heard Of'. That would have featured the younger up and coming steelers of which Johnny was one of. Wish we would have done it. Johnny, thanks for allowing me to enjoy your great steel playing this week-end.

Dave, thanks for the kind words. It was great seeing you again. Too bad we never got around to that record. We could still do it and call it " You Might Of Heard Of Us"! _________________ Johnny "Dumplin" Cox

I'm sure you did a killer set, as usual. Will you be at Super Jam this weekend?

Son, we live in a world with walls, and those walls have to be guarded by men with steel guitars. Who's gonna do it? You? You, Lt. Weinberg? |

Herb, as it turns out I'll be in Nashville Thursday and Friday. I hope to get by on Friday depending on my schedule. _________________ Johnny "Dumplin" Cox

Johnny played in the Jackson room Saturday afternoon ...........that alone was worth the price of admission to the convention. He along with Justin Trevino presided. They ended with Darrell McCall/Dicky Overbey's 'Mary Dear' which Darrell and Dicky did on the early morning concert. Johnny and Justin simply nailed it.....merely awesome. Not a dry eye in the room, at least mine weren't. Thank you so much Johnny and Justin. |

I caught Johnny's show in the Jackson room. Johnny reminded me of the days back in the seventies when all he could think about was the steel guitar...Hanging out at Julian's and picking for hours on end. I felt his excitement again last weekend. Johnny was so intent that I actually expected he and his steel to start to levitate. At times I thought that his intensity was going to cause him to fall off of his stool.
Again, a great show Johnny and I hate that I have missed so much the past three decades.

I caught the Saturday show in the Jackson room as well. It brought me back to lower Broadway in the mid 70s. Great playing by Johnny and also the guest players (especially that killer young fiddle player). |

Johnny, you gave us all a lesson in humility on Saturday afternoon in the Jackson Room. What a fantastic set and your playing was out of this world (and the rest of those guys weren't too bad either:)
